Probably too late to suggest this, but: both structurally and for maintaining life-support, a sphere gives you the best bang for your resource buck. If you want it skyscraper-like to put propulsion behind the main bulk, consider a Prolate Ellipsoid (think of a thin, long egg -- as long as vaguely phallic isn't a problem for you).
