There should be a rule against renaming pubs. There's one on the bus route in to Norwich that never seems to stay the same name two years together. And since the bus stop is named for the pub, this is a pain in the neck. Pubs are navigation points even when there's no bus involved. There's a big sign with a pretty picture and a name, you can tell people it and they can spot it, all good. And usually there's only one of them per place, though not always, there's two Coach and Horses in Norwich just for starters. But Norwich had a church for every sunday and a pub for every day. That's a lot of names. The list I can find only has 156, and some of those are closed. I'd say 'sad' but I kind of hate alcohol. Sad they didn't turn into food based community?
ANYway
The Phoenix Hotel in Dereham has been renamed. Which is vaguely annoying, because I was going to use it in my urban fantasy story, on account of having a good name. But it is specifically annoying that it has been renamed The Romany Rye. Because while there was only one Phoenix Hotel that google can find in Norfolk, there's already a Romany pub. The big sign says Romany but the bus stop name is apparently Romany Rye.
Thanks, J D Wetherspoon, for complicating everyone's navigation.
... actual thanks for reopening and renovating the place, but sarcasm thanks on the rename.
What was wrong with Phoenix?
*sigh*
Plot bunny generator though: I reckon you could make an entire quite interesting urban fantasy just using pub names for characters and settings and events and stuff. There's some good ones. The Adam and Eve has been there since 1249, plenty of time slip opportunity there. Lots of history. http://www.adamandevenorwich.co.uk/history.htm
... I have some characters, I have some incidents, I somewhat lack plot. I should go back to my nice spaceship where I have an actual plot. But there's a werecat in my head who started speaking in sonnet so the wild wouldn't take him. I don't know if I can make that work, but it's an interesting puzzle piece.
