bad boyfriends

I know I went looking for / pairings, but then I get frustrated when the only plot is how the / get together and all that romance relationships stuff. I'm reading about star spanning adventurers, here! I don't care about their bad relationships unless they lead to suns blowing up!
Mostly though, I want to sit some of these writers down and explain: if every relationship in someone's life is horrible awful terrible bad, restraining orders and public humiliation and everyone hates them zomg, except for this one person? It is not actually romantic.
Because it's not saying that they looked at the whole world and chose this one special person. It's just saying the whole world sucks except this one person who is not in fact actively trying to kill them. I mean, there's not much choosing involved there.
It's a problem in some fics where they have to break up a canon pairing to get their / on, but in the case of the fic I wasted my whole day reading, every relationship is an OC, and they're all terrible people. In either case it's boring. It should be all, may the best man win. Two good choices and this one the perfect one.
Also, if every relationship ends in horrible messy breakup, it doesn't actually make the current / pairing look good. I mean, there was a pattern going on there. Compare and contrast is intended, but there's the sneaking suspicion of this one heading for the cliff edge too.
Also also, it is not, repeat not, romantic to have someone say they want to kill anyone else you shag. I mean, maybe in happy secure world such hyperbole can be ignored, but in the real world that's, like, symptoms.
I want to rewind today and read something else. Or possibly play computer games. *sigh*
