Finished watching Forever Knight. Last two episodes felt back to front. I mean the second to last one was all doom and apocalypse and end of the world as we know it and then the very last one... was some thing about some guy and some money. I think next time I'll watch them the other way around. The apocalypse one makes a good season end, the other really doesn't.

I've never seen season 3, and as I understand it practically everything changed anyways. So I guess I've watched all the episodes in one way.
Season 2 definitely better than season 1. Depth, layers, and Lucien LaCroix. Don't get me wrong, Nick is okay, and certainly would be easier to live with (though the brooding thing would get old). But LaCroix has the complexity, the broad range of possibilities. To figure out what Nick is going to do in any given situation you basically need to know the date. To figure out LaCroix you need a complete history and some dice. He kills for fun, but he lets people live when the rules of the vampire community suggest they really ought to get killed. When Schanke is all 'Are you a vampire?' LaCroix simply *talks him out of it*. And if he even used vampire powers to do it we don't the usual sound effects. It seemed more like he just understands people that well. And when he is doing his Nightcrawler bit... what does he get out of that, if he actually doesn't care about people? He knows them, he needs them... and he happily feeds on them. Fascinating.

Yes, again I'm kind of ignoring the hero to concentrate on the dark one. But it is like I've said before about Methos, about Ethan Rayne - life isn't black and white, and the traditional hero or even tortured hero has such a limited range. I'm more interested in rainbows. LaCroix is a character who initially seems to be shades of red, but just keeps getting more interesting. I love that.

Forever Knight played here in the States as a late night alternative to Johnny Carson and David Letterman. It played once/week, in turn with Silk Stalkings and 3 other series, all of which I've forgotten. FK was the only one I watched, intermittently at first, then, with the regular appearance of La Croix, watched it regularly. Eventually, it started moving all over the dial, so I lost track of it, then found it, then lost track, then found again. By the time the series ended, even though there were only 3 seasons, it felt like 5!

It was a great series, but clearly showed the major problem with having a vampire hero: they age.

I think one of the reasons I loved the Angel and Spike backstories so much was that I always enjoyed the FK backstories.

A great series --- and I take it it's available in the UK in DVD format?

Well, depends on the actor, ya know? G W-D aged well, but he did look about 10 years older after 3 seasons, so....not of the good. And DB? looks at least a dozen years old --- which is not of the good, considering it was only 8 years..and, of course, JM... He looked ~25/28 when he was actually early 30s. Now, I think he looks about 35-40, and he's early 40s.

TV work is a killer; all those 12-16 hour days, tons of non-breathing make-up, prosthetic devices on the face, and the adhesives (I think) aren't good for the skin, etc. It just ages.
