Doctor Who
Jun. 18th, 2005 07:45 pmIt is possible I hate that ending more than the entire rest of the series put together. On so many levels, I do not like that ending. It was going so well, and then the single biggest reason I've disliked this season kicked into massive overdrive and now... I have Issues.
The trouble is it was also, in almost every way, perfect. Just... I really hate that ending.
The series is not called Rose. So, how come the entire build up of the season is about Rose, serves Rose, makes Rose the hero, and has the Doctor step out of the way for Rose to show off?
On the other hand, Jack was perfect, every moment, every level. I cheered out loud at the kisses. Just treating them both the same, as of course he would.
And the Doctor making the call to be 'coward' instead of killer was right.
And yet, if that was right, why was what Rose did okay? I mean, yeah, generally killing the monsters is more socially acceptable than killing the entire planet full of humans, but still, is that the only reason this Doctor didn't push the button? Not exactly a moral choice then. Bit depressing that way around.
And what is up with making Daleks part human this season?
Also, why is it not a solution?
They just played the clip which they called the Time Lords firing the first shot in the Time War - sending the Doctor to *either* prevent the creation of the Daleks *or* alter their genetics to make them more benevolent. So there was an attempt to blow them up. Was there no attempt to make them nice guys? Wars don't end because you exterminate the other guy - ethnic cleansing has been tried, but very rarely succeeds. Most of the time war ends because people make friends, or even intermarry. Part human Daleks - solution! But hey, not, because they hate themselves so much they just get suicidal or extra homicidal. So the writing blocks the characters in to the ethnic cleansing solution. Wonderful ethics there.
Guy that plays Jack talking about Doctor/Jack/Rose - "I'm not talking about a sexual love, all the time." (or words to that effect). heh, just some of the time. I like.
I don't like that Jack got left behind, tho I do understand that the Doctor might not know
"However I kiss Rose, I have to kiss him in exactly the same way"
yes, the actor gets it.
Jack's line "I was much better off as a coward", echoed later by the Doctor's choice. huh.
"It wasn't a kiss of I finally get to kiss you, It was a kiss of I really really care for you, I love you deeply, and I have to say goodbye." Okay, I want today's Confidential on tape/download because he is getting it exactly right, which would be why the performance got exactly right.
Er, I might be sounding a bit strange saying 'exactly right' as if I dictate right and wrong - I just mean it seems to me to be exactly emotionally right, everything I'd hope for.
I can't say it enough times - Bisexual action hero! Happy happy joy joy HAPPY!
And he gets a good death, but they bring him back again. Best of both worlds I guess. I mean seeing him die made me worry a teeny tiny bit but on that one point I trust the writers - the very last people to play kill the queer.
You know the really odd thing about this 'Confidential' bit is how it keeps dropping into Songvid. Odd.
Last thought - remember at the start of the season when they were all shock horror the Doctor quits? Media manipulation much? Because that ending was filmed already, and they've just been playing the audience.
That kiss that the Doctor saves Rose with - I dislike that kiss because it makes romance the most important thing again. The Doctor is *bigger* than that. Compassion, vast and enduring compassion, caring about whole planets, that is what he is about. Romance? Is *small*. Personal isn't the same as important. And yet in this season it is more important.
Okay, I'm in the minority there. I know our current culture puts pairing up and podding out at a higher value than compassion without pairing. Monks are considered strange, not thought to be living the best life. And little celibate me isn't exactly that way by choice, so you could call it bitterness. But. I still think it makes things smaller.
He should have saved her, duh, of course, but couldn't he have done it by looking or touching or holding hands? Holding hands has worked out well for them this year. Hands are connecting and doing together. There should have been some aspect of *together* about the solution. I wouldn't have complained if she had simply *helped*.
I'll buy the DVDs from when Jack arrives in the series. Partly because I am that overjoyed about bisexual action hero character in prime time. Partly because I just like the guy. The annoying parts wore off pretty quickly. He is fun.
But I think the focus of the season was wrong. It ignored backstory from the original series in favour of this one grand angsty thing they had happen off screen, and right from the start they were telling the story of Rose with the Doctor as a guest star. I call that wrong. I know a lot of people will disagree with me. And I agree there were a *lot* of great things about this season. But it didn't quite work for me.
Hope next season is better.

Date: 2005-06-19 07:08 pm (UTC)I know there's a lot of people out there bitching about the ending and calling it another deus ex machina, but not me. I guess it all boils down to whether you like the idea of the TARDIS being a character instead of just a mode of transportation; a lot of the old skool fans don't seem to.
And yes, Jack was absolutely perfect.

Date: 2005-06-19 07:16 pm (UTC)The trouble is I didn't get that from the episode, and the Confidential was full of the writers saying how great it is that Rose saved the day and Rose gets to be the equal of the Doctor, so I can't buy that the writers intended it. But, TARDIS as character saving the day I could love.
I guess this is why is good that I can read it however I like... :)

Date: 2005-06-19 07:34 pm (UTC)As it is, with the whole idea of the TARDIS being at least half of the sentience behind those lines and that scene, I'm getting plot bunnies. Well that and Jack getting left behind, that's giving me plot bunnies too.
Sigh. Don't need plot bunnies to another fandom. >pout<
Though yay! Can finally start working on my Doctor Who songvid now that I have the whole series. :)
