I was going to skip Countrycide but then when I did I was :-( so I decided to watch it after all.

I like how it used the camera things that usually mean 'scary monster we're saving for the first scream break' to play on audience's expectations. And they're putting the team through their paces, like with Cyberwoman they trap them among all their toys and see what happens, and this time they strip the toys away. Except for Jack's, because his gun and his wrist thing are always with him.
... they don't do so very well without tech.

... Torchwood are a bunch of idiots. I mean, it's not just Owen, it's all of them. I know they don't know they've walked into the wrong genre, but even accounting for that. And Gwen... how is it she's supposed to have been a police officer but human evil messes with her head? Humans are creeps. Surely the police know that?

Also, Gwen is so socially useless. She's all on at them to be more human, but she's really useless at it. Stupid questions and just up and forgetting that she shot her co-worker's girlfriend in front of him. You'd think that would be memorable. And then in Greeks Bearing Gifts at the end she seems to be equating her shagging Owen with Tosh and Mary. Except, slight difference, Mary was just killed by their boss in front of Tosh. Is that really the time to be any worried at all about socially awkward things Tosh might know? Blergh. So I, autistic spectrum me, think Gwen is socially useless, but she hasn't noticed yet. She thinks having feeeeeelings at everyone is the same as caring.

Ianto is better at caring. Coffee or food at the right moment is more useful than self centered questions. So now I kind of want to put Tosh and Ianto together until they're both less ouchy.
... I think I had a plot bunny for that involving flats that shrink. *blinks* Old bunnies are weird once you've forgotten all the connecting bits.

Greeks Bearing Gifts: That really didn't make any sense at all.
I mean, even leaving aside the Greeks bit, which was a bit useless, she was all trying to stay away from Torchwood and then she was desperate to get in, and she left her whatsit buried for ages and then she was desperate to get it back, and then they all stood there and talked about the plot for ages doing absolutely nothing.

Gwen was useless again. Has she done anything useful in the first 7 episodes? If so, I must have blinked and missed it.
I don't want to Gwen bash, but if they wanted to write a police officer, shouldn't she have some skills at some point?

I think I said ages ago how I'd fix the episode and be themey about Torchwood at the same time: Mary isn't the prisoner, she's the guard. Then the people with their heart punched out are like the first one or like the person Tosh followed, only maybe a bit more ambiguous. People thinking about crimes. And then it's judge jury and executioner, from Mary and Torchwood both. Then she hasn't gone for her teleporter because she had a duty on Earth, and it's only Torchwood having it that is a problem, on account of they could go back to her planet and be bastards to her people. By the time they get into the Hub and it ceases to make sense and people talk in turns and explain the plot to each other I can do nothing for it. There needs to be an entirely different scene there. Jack reprograms the transporter, Tosh is persuaded to sneak it out of the Hub and back to Mary, but as soon as she gets hold of it the thing powers up. Mary would assume it's going back to hers. She could ask Tosh to go with her and Tosh would choose Earth and duty and helping people rather than Mary and exploring alien life. And then it turns out Jack set it to go into the sun, so it's a good thing she didn't try and quit Torchwood. Uses Jack's immunity to telepathy instead of going lalala and turning it off and on. There's other possible endings. I'm just trying to think of a better one in five minutes than they actually used.

... okay, so, until I make a script that someone wants to use, I shouldn't be judgey.

I just... that really didn't make any sense.

Plus, evil insane dead lesbians, always annoying.

So next is They Keep Killing Suzie, and Gwen is new and improved depths of useless.
Lovely.

Torchwood in season 1 were not the good guys. They were useless idiots at best, but with Jack doing torture and killing people's girlfriends, not to mention the bit I skipped with the kid, that's really not good guy stuff. They were fun to watch, but seriously, they were messed up.

The other thing is, you can complain about the writing being all mismatched and not strung together, or you can invest in the world enough to find explanations for how it all makes sense, but the latter makes the characters look bad.

Although Owen doesn't need much help. I mean, he has his good moments, he's always happy to put himself in harm's way, and Gwen does keep trying to throttle him so him grabbing her isn't pure out of nowhere creepy. But there is always the creepy.

Ianto's looking best thus far and he nearly destroyed the world.

Got to love team Torchwood.
Makes you feel good about your own potential in the face of such things.

In Gwen's defense, even being a police officer does not prepare you for finding yourself in village of cannibals.
