:-)
I read someone complaining last week how they've missed a chance to do gritty spy drama. I consider that a good thing. This is fun. You know how much TV is actually fun? I do not wish to watch grimdark things that actually want to make the audience feel beat up. I like this shiny thing.
This week we shall learn about teamwork, yaays!
also, shall learn about the permanent set which has been built at great expense.
(6 days! *sniggers*)
I kind of love that they explicitly and in episode two told Coulson he's having a really obvious mid life crisis. Which, you know, shiny car in the promos, we have been saying. He's all 'more afterlife' about it. (And he's still saying 'it's a magical place' every time about Tahiti, and someone else has noticed).
I also love that he has all these cool toys of a 'simpler' time. He's a fanboy, and it's not just Cap.
He also keeps saying things that make me want to hug him. He's sort of a goof so far. I like it.
... my main worry for the show was they'd do something to Coulson to make him no fun. that would be sad.
Melinda May? :-)
Cavalry / Don't call me that.
extreme badass

Yeah, coherent and in depth analysis is maybe for later, or for other shows. This show is nicely put together and I don't mind finding things out at the speed they show them to us.
Skye and her thing about having 1% of the solution, and how fast she soaks up clues, that's of the good. Also I'm glad she's keeping her own agenda for more than a whole week. Switching sides that fast would just be embarrassing. Also also I'm glad Coulson knows to keep an eye on her. And I wonder if Ward does. He thinks he has a shiny. People skills? Hrm.
I'm liking when Coulson doesn't show us the math and seems as aware of the whole story as we are.
... you know, fourth wall awareness, on a fanboy, that would be... *blinks* ... but no, he's just that good, right?
I'm not coming up with any deep thoughts, because this ep just kind of skipped along fast and stayed with the characters to the point it felt pretty much realtime. All action, demonstrate everyone's skills again, make them fit together, and underline how badass everyone actually is. Also what their flaws are. Work is badass, personal stuff is making it difficult in a few directions. Ward is too prickly pride, FitzSimmons is scareds, May... distancing to protect self? It's not the same panic fear but it's fear. Hmmm, Ward fear of what? Everyone's scared of something.
Coulson keeps mentioning the stabbing thing. It's like it's a whole life changing thing there. Who could have guessed? ;-)
I liked the slingshot at the end, but I'm not sure I buy it. I mean, Fury had phase three weapons, if they're destroying tesseract weapons now how new is that? But it looks plausible enough. And also cool. And wouldn't it be nice if people just threw away weapons for being too nasty?
I'll buy that they launch them, I don't buy that it goes into the sun. So who else is up there?
Eh, might not be that kind of universe, we get to find out.
By the end of the episode I still like everyone and I'll happily watch again next week. So that's working.
Next week I predict we'll start digging into backstory by way of parallels with the opponent of the week. Don't know who they'll start with. Coulson's the long game, so one of the newers. (I have no spoilers, I'm just guessing.) This one felt a lot like a pilot though, with the recap of all pertinent points, reintroduction of everyone by name early, and showcasing each skill set. If they keep doing that for a while... how many episodes does it have for sure already? I've been watching UK TV and got out of the rhythm of US season lengths.
there could be lots and lots of this. that could be shiny. here's hoping.

I did like how the ex girlfriend was set up, with the cheek kissing and it being weird when she's acting sexy at him at work. None of that James Bond having expectations bit.
Coulson is nice and professionally respectful of people he's had sex with. That's an extra level up of professional.

Was it just me, or are there hints of former shows? The set design reminds me of W&H in season five of Angel and the Dollhouse, the Group sitting in the back of the plane watching the rocket had a definit <Firefly feel to it. Not like Whedon is shamelessly copying from his previous projects, but enough bits and pieces to identify his handwriting even in subtle background things.
Yay, shiny!
