Doctor Who: Big Finish Audio
Jan. 14th, 2014 07:28 pmToday I listened to
Love and War
which was pretty good, so then I wanted to hear more Ace, so
162 Protect and Survive (enough to refresh me, I heard it on the radio)
163 Black and White
164 Gods and Monsters
... that was epic. Also upsetting. Also awesome. Also :-( and :-o and !
You know that thing where you really like a character? And you know that thing where it usually just means it hurts more when they do that?
:-(
Protect and Survive freaked me out because all that nuclear war stuff, and the sirens, and reminding me of comics that were scary when kind of too small to be coping with the concept nuclear war... hang on, I'm not sure anyone gets old enough to cope with that concept. End of everything. Slowly and messily. Pretty much thinking that's not a concept to which cope applies. But, nuclear war, on repeat. One hell of a groundhog day. And the Doctor set it all up? 7 really is the scariest. Like, that bit at the end of the one with 10 and the scarecrows, that was weird because it was 10, but when it was 7 in the book (I haven't read) I imagine it fit. And then at the end that prisoner's dilemma where Ace and Hex both volunteered to stay dying over and over and over forever so the other would be saved... that's a bit beyond willing to die for each other. But it's the Doctor's rules so it was just another test. It's easy to not like him.
Black and White: the Doctor growing a TARDIS and telling it stories about its mother, his usual TARDIS, and talking about happy endings... that was really sweet and happy making, so that should have been a clue that was not going to end well. Like, if the TARDIS is alive enough that it can hear and enjoy stories, what kind of cold bastard grows it to be fuel for its mother? That's whole new layers of wrong.
The idea of the Doctor having a second black ops TARDIS that is actually black, with soldiers inside, that seemed fake to me. Like I kept listening for the point where they turn out to be liars. But no, that was just a thing he did this time. What about that speech where he's all saying how if you bring guns you only think of gun type solutions? It's not that he's anti other people using guns though, he does drag them along and aim them, it just seemed odd. But 7 setting out to wage war, that's not new. And then getting in over his head and dragging his friends along, that fits.
The whole thing with Beowulf was fun. Plus with the thing about stories and starting out fake but living up to them, that was solid theme stuff. And the storyteller who learned he wasn't the writer on this one was pretty good foreshadowing. That was all good story. but then...
Gods and Monsters: Woah. Did not see that coming. It was all fair play though. I liked the idea of the Doctor's hubris kicking him in the head. And all the running around being chess was pretty gripping.
And then, Hex.
:-(
Excellent way to go, if you've got to go. Took out two elder gods. Well played.
But, he's a nurse. And his story arc has always been getting dragged through wars and thrown into soldier type situations. Not so he can step up and do violence, so he can get upset about it and really try not to.
So he had a soldier ending, and it was a big win, but it was a bit sad.
Except he wasn't shooting soldiers, he was taking out the beings who think of soldiers and all the rest as pawns, so he was at least aimed the right way.
Proper good story though, making with the thoughtful, giving heroism and the horror of war at once.
And then the after the credits bit. All I can say about that is
!
So that was an excellent and very full day of listening.
I've got so many stories downloaded at once I keep listening to a bunch in a row, but today I feel like the story version of overeating, like I should have given each story more time to sink in. But in a good way? But I'll have to think about scheduling.
... also, I played Fate for like 8 hours today, which could be considered a bit much computer game. Maybe I should vary my activities a bit more. Plan to move occasionally.
Though today was also cleaner day and food delivery day, and all necessary tasks were achieved, though as usual Tesco couldn't deliver all the things I actually ordered so I'll have to buy more juice again on Sunday. So things got done AND I listened to Doctor Who AND I played all the computer games. Pretty good day.
