You know, stories are kind of fractal. Any story, any world setup, any set of characters, any moment of time, you can refocus on one detail of it and come up with just as many thousand words as you planned to use in the first place, talking about just that moment.

Have been working on story for many hours.
Have now not as many words as I had when I put it down yesterday.
And I keep on getting distracted by minor characters, and world setup, as per usual.

*sighs*

Personally I'd say you're better writing down everything and deleting or moving stuff around once you've finished. But that's just me. Your Mileage May Vary.

oh I have a notepad file just for words I'm getting rid of. It tends to end up much longer than the main thing. Yesterday I backed up by a whole conversation and made it much more succinct in the rewrite, so, not so many words in the actual story.

The keeping on going regardless thing only works if I don't write myself into blind alleys, which would be unprecedented.
