GURPS. Grrr.
Feb. 9th, 2014 08:25 amBuilding characters in GURPS is so frustrating. It kind of has to be, because to be proper generic it has to have All The Options, which means fiddling around for half way to forever trying to pick out specific options. Also I can never resist trying to use the martial arts rules and then remembering there's too many billions of options for me to ever get the hang of the martial arts rules.
Today I re installed GURPS Character Assistant and built two characters. Like, I've been awake a whole day, and that was what I did. Two. Characters.
Also, since I only use them as inspiring templates for characters I never end up actually writing, and since one of the characters was basically trying to be generic Hawkeye in medieval world, that was kind of pointless. *sigh* But he ended up different because I got frustrated over how much his bow would cost. I can't figure out if I bought him any actual arrows, the equipment list is too long, but if I didn't I certainly did buy a tool kit and the parts to make more arrows, so he can stop off and do that. But to get him a decent bow I had to buy signature gear, only I couldn't find the button so to start with I was just trading points for money which works out far more point expensive, so eventually I had to buy him an Enemy just so I had the points to get him a bow. And then I had lots of spare points, so, a bow and a decent horse and some light leather armour. So his enemy, his brother, is somehow connected to the acquisition of horse, armour, and bow. Reckon there's story in that.
There's story in everything, I just never sit down and write them.
Sometimes I like the fiddly numbers and other times I just get annoyed that I can't make them dance in that particular program. ... and yet I'm sitting here planning to write up a third character next.
I have no idea how it plays. Haven't had a group to use it with.
But with enough bending the edges I can indeed invent any character I can think of with accompanying chances of success, which is pretty cool, and doing what it says on the tin.
