homes magazines are not very helpful.

Whenever something looks good it is either antique, salvage, or bespoke.
All the bookshelves were either bespoke or 'I learned carpentry'.
One of them was bespoke hidden doors to the video room. Which is cool, but it made it sound like they felt the need to hide their TV behind their books, like they're embarrassed they watch the moving pictures. :eyeroll:

And storage, in general, is ridiculous. I don't know why the kitchens need so much of it, and I can't see how the rest of the house needs so little, unless they're secretly storing their clothes in the kitchen. Which I guess would work.
But then one house has a dressing room, like they had bespoke cabinets where all their shoes were on precisely sized racks and individually lit. And everything else had it's own kind of cupboard and drawer. So again, storage, too little or too much.
And one house they showed all the pictures and then said something about the master bedroom being so compact they keep their clothes in the barn. Really? That's a home they want to show people? Oh, hi, it doesn't work, we must cross the... garden? Fields? It didn't even say. Cross the outside world every single morning to acquire clothing, but don't worry, the house looks pretty.

So many places are so white. It's not just that they paint the walls white, it's that everything is so empty. Blergh.

And the books that go on the shelves, I try to ignore it, but so many seem to care more about if they're color co-ordinated or... tidy or something. One proudly described how they built the shelves then went round the local charity shops buying up 'leather' bound books to put on them. ... books are for reading, how do they not know that? The other way looks so soulless. Or knowing it's a fake collection they're like zombie books. They look like the real thing but inside they're missing something. *shudders*

There were some nice library steps though. And a couple of places that had got bespoke shelves up to the ceiling with books of random heights and colors. Those were a relief.

Beds are weird and awkward though. Some of them were so designer I couldn't see how you wouldn't bang yourself on the corners every night. And headboards. They're just weird. I've seen some twirly ones that just make me think of untangling my hair from the bars every morning. But the soft fabric ones kind of bother me because those can't go in the washing machine, so they're being like pillows, but without pillow cases. That seems like it would smell very personalised.

The houses they put in the thing are a bit much though. Like, mostly listed buildings, or holiday homes, or weekend getaway places. I don't know if there's a different magazine that would be more for houses you might actually ever live in, I suppose they're not the point.

There were some pretty bits and interesting bits, but mostly it just made me wonder how people who decorate ever get anything done, since their 'desks' tend to be too small for a laptop and I can't see where they stick their files. Blah. Boring.

... it's possible I'll end up decorating from office supplies catalogues? That doesn't sound very appealing...

There's probably tumblrs and blogs that do the same thing as the magazines but more customized. People whose first question is 'but what does it do' have to decorate too.

At the moment I don't know how to improve my flat without emptying it first. There's nowhere to put the stuff while I figure out where to put the stuff. It's a bit awkward. but it's all my stuff. I want to keep my stuff. Well, a lot of it anyway. And sorting through it for stuff I might not be so attached to immediately has the same problem of where to put the stuff while sorting the stuff. Bit of a long term error there.

What keywords to search to find pictures of houses?
I got to be careful, looking for pictures of Norwich found pictures of naked women looking for dates in Norwich, which was not so much of the good at all at all.

I guess the magazine has an associated website. I could start there.
