I finished reading the first book of the Griffin Mage Trilogy. Kes, tiny human girl, meets griffins and learns how to use fire magic, becoming the most essential person in a three nation war. That makes it sound like a good story, but it's not at all. She doesn't get any choice about any of it. All the choices are made by men. She doesn't even get to choose which man to follow. The griffin guy, the lord from her own country, the spy from the neighbour country, the king from the neighbour country, they all choose things for her and capture her and take her places and do all the thinking parts. She just gets picked up and changed and plugged in to the griffins like some kind of magic healing power pack.

She chooses to go with in the first instance, because she has some skill at healing, mostly horses with herbs, and the griffin mage says there are injured. Then she decides she can't just let people die, which does make a difference, but was what the men wanted to use her for. Then she goes to talk to a king, to warn him, which is brave and all except it doesn't make any difference and the choices that change things are all men. After that she just heals people a bunch. Not because she's clever and studied, just by letting the power go through her.

I'm annoyed with this book.

I'm annoyed at how many books manage this exact same trick, appear to put a woman in the center of the story and then just have stuff happen to her.

If this book was a separate volume I wouldn't bother buying the sequel. But as it is the whole trilogy is in one wrapper, so I'll likely read the rest, because book in front of my eyes.

boring.
