This story talked about the origins of evil. It mentioned the most evil beings in the universe, created by a 'bitter cripple'. That was what they thought was important to mention. Not the whole planet going through generations of war that twisted them up with hate until they aimed Davros at the problem of destruction and he thought the Dalek mutant was their only chance of survival. Nothing so systemic. He's a 'bitter cripple', linking his disability to his creation of evil.

I kind of want to slap someone.

I know this is the subtext really very often with Doctor Who and disability, but I can hate it just as much every single time.

Most of the story was something with a serial killer and some unspoiled natives being mind controlled.
... yes, theme, it has it.
Not very interesting, just not much objectionable.

Crystal Palace exhibition, very shiny.
... the first episode has finished and I actually like this? It's just a story, with lots of running around and mistaken identity and accidental famous people. That seems the proper shape.
... part 2 starts with enslavement, whipping, and forcing C'rizz to get naked. Er, creepy?
and now a Mr Dimplesqueeze is checking out Charley's ankles. :blinks:
... feeds her, gives her ale, says 'payment in kind', oh great, now Charley's yelling about how she's not a prostitute, that... I don't feel that's a useful addition to the story. I mean it's by far the least creepy near sexual assault she's been through, since he just tries to buy her and then she slaps him and leaves, but still, do we have to do that quite so often? (and it doesn't turn out to be relevant again later, it's just a random incident.)

C'rizz is in a cage in a freak show and a midget is explaining how this is his normal life and the best he could get. Wow, the progressive treatment of disability is so notable. *facepalm*
I mean, alien ending up in a freak show, that's a story, just... do we need to hear the patter about how human the midget is? Because usually that just goes without saying.

more mistaken identity and not exactly escaping for the Doctor. That part is fun.
aaaaand now someone declares he's her husband? Oh well done, that's going to be interesting.
(hmmm, does it count as forced marriage if there's no mind control this time?)
Hmmm, "I never really thought of myself as a family man" mixes poorly with existence of Granddaughter unless he ran real early.

there's quite a lot of good bits. The Doctor and this woman who says he's her husband, and Charley and the Duke of Wellington.
but then there's the bits with the 'midget' and it's all tooth grinding. I mean, usually the Doctor's companions meet a bunch of people with skills and talents and knowledge, and helps them with their revolution or whatever. This time there's a disabled person conspiring in their own oppression and being treated like an animal. Why tell it this way? Why not a heroic captive and they escape together?

Charley saying "I've probably broken a few laws of time." Yes. That seems a theme. and an actually interesting one.

The bit with the mislead marriage is less fun because she seems to just believe it. If it was a cunning plan it would be very cunning, but it seems to be her being so desperate she sees what she wants to. That's not nice.
And now she's in danger. Booooorrrring. Ladies should save themselves sometimes.
Police save her instead. Well that's unusual too.

... C'rizz gets saved, the 'midget' chooses to stay with his abuser. That's a suck ending.
Now the married lady is sad because she realises the Doctor isn't her guy. And she's switching to it being a cunning plan. That works better. I guess they thought she'd be more sympathetic this way? I like cunning best.

Now they're talking about the 'midget' in terms of "Where would he go, who would look after him?" Grrr.
C'rizz confronts his captor.
C'rizz ... "My friends tell me I should save you" Oh very dear.
oh eeeew, C'rizz's solution? Now the guy running the freakshow can't move his legs or see.
The midget's response? "Like I said before, we need each other, you and me. Though I think you need me more than I need you. [...] I'll take care of you Mr Crackles. For now."
... that's just making disability itself the horror. Oh I dislike this quite intensely. That's creepy and gross.
Also makes no sense, if his problem is he can't imagine how to cope without a tall person around, how does it help to keep him now he's more disabled?
Gross gross gross.

This is a really ugly way to include disability. Really nasty.
And unfortunately in keeping with other Doctor Who stories.
Grrrrr.

The whole story with C'rizz is a really odd choice. He's the Doctor's companion who just happens to be a serial killer with voices in his head. Who thought that was a good idea? I mean there's 'darker and edgier' and there's 'oh hey trail of corpses in Doctor Who'.

So everyone meets up again in the Crystal Palace and the mistaken identities are sorted out and the TARDIS is back and lalala happy ending... and the woman finds her actual husband actually waiting for her at the crystal palace? Obviously logic is not the point here.

But if it's all happy endings then I'm super creeped out by the freakshow strand.

I don't really know what to think about that one on the whole. Like two thirds of the story is a lot of running around and mistaken identity and impersonating people, and then there's a nasty bit of ablist horror in the other third. I think I dislike it rather a lot, in part because if it's trying to be a light hearted adventure then that's what it thinks the bit in the freakshow was too, and that's just really nasty.
