MacGyver is being less fun than I'd hoped. The inventing things from random things is fun, but so far the story seems to be: go somewhere foreign, meet a stereotype or three, prove they couldn't look after themselves without the American white guy, profit.
that wasn't what I was looking for.
the pilot episode was all America as far as I could tell. Maybe they go back to that soon? That would be more better.

... oh lovely, this one just had cute kid of the week be a 'gypsy' pickpocket.
shall I skip the racism or just ignore it?

I put it on fast forward, it doesn't lose anything, it's so sloooooow in ye old days.

it just compared gypsies to dog fleas?
I just deleted the episode.

I don't care how old the slander is, it's no excuse for repeating it.

Okay, trying another, with some trepidation.

(incidentally, CBS Action doesn't play well with the recorder box, it's always slightly after the start of the ep and usually slightly before the end.)

The bit before the opening credits is like nearly 7 minutes of being clever on a theme, without that pesky plot problem.

This episode has a lady photo journalist taking pictures and being brave. She still needs saving a lot though.
... oh, now she just made them crash because stupid. that's... this is what women had on TV in the 80s? Wow do I not miss this.

"You keep me off balance. I think I like it." With plinky romantic version of the theme??!
I can't actually make sense of much they're saying because music and no subtitles but now there's kissing and it's just so random. like, this is the part of the episode where they kiss, don't worry about relationships or having had a conversation beyond the being shot at run stuff.

It's weird, this time even the bad guy foreign general needs a white American to tell him how to do his job. Who even thought this way?

okay, so, that one didn't suck, but he mostly found boom stuff and set it off. I mean, fun, don't get me wrong, but it's like everything actually clever was in the first six minutes, and after that, mostly boom.

more Macgyver... wait, it's the opening credits already? is there no seperate being clever bit?
episode called "The Heist"
Producer Terry Nation always makes me wonder when the Daleks are turning up.
... Directed by Alan Smithee?

Lots of random women in swimwear. Wow, that's not pointless or cheap at all.

martial arts exhibition where you only see the back of the guy's head. subtle.

I like MacGyver's logic that, since the guy says he doesn't have any diamonds, it can't be stealing if they walk off with them. like, don't buy.

Heh, getting all dressed up fancy, trying to get his hair to stop sticking up at teh back, funny faces of fail.
Her dress is sparkly.

I'm bored, nothing clever happened yet and it's 13 minutes in.

... he just unzipped a woman's dress and left her standing in her underwear as a distraction. everyone is grinning. that's kind of awful.

He's also making like it's easy to cheat at dice and they wouldn't be missed in like two seconds? What?
okay, so he's swapped the dice so they always do 7. clearly casinos never have to deal with that. blah.
oh, getting caught was part of his plan. fair enough.
wait, no, he's doing escapign? I thought he wanted to go to that guy's office?
no, his private suite. so caught was not the plan. that's boring then.

so far this episode he fixed the dice and now he's tying a door closed. science!
booooored.

and now there's random cylinders of some gas lying around?

This show is totally why I wanted a swiss army knife since I was tiny.

Imagining a world where security cameras were really that crappy... so weird. Actually I'm not buying that, even the supermarket ones were more useful with the curved mirrors and all. Oh, he's just blocking it, that's... why use a mirror for that? That's not clever.
being able to pull it down is a tiny bit clever.
Clever would be making the wrong bit of hall be all it could see or something.

fibre optics to fix the light beam security. you know, either they do this a lot, or I actually remember this exact bit of episode from when I was about 8. or of course from the probable reruns.
Wouldn't he have to put both ends in simultaneously to even theoretically not interrupt the beam and make this work?
eh, points for the idea, not the execution.

It's very convenient that the idiot bad guy opens his vault to check it and yet doesn't check his wardrobe. That's either too thorough or not thorough enough.

... musical notes lock?

okay, this is not plausibility world.

its like the only music they have is his theme tune. in different instruments and keys. that's it.
it is possible to get bored of that.

... I guess they didn't have in mind someone marathoning episodes.

why would a magnet mess up a roulette wheel like that? I never paid attention, how are they made?

*some action later*
... the girl got caught. is being stupid to make the plot happen the basic function of women here?

Heh, parachuting a car out the back of an airplane. And getting it perfectly balanced, of course.

ugh, kissing.

different kissing every week. why we supposed to like that guy?

I mean so far there's sidekick girl of the week, who has local knowledge and gets captured. So the women don't get to be important, like they would as a regular, and there's no actual relationships, because kiss and credits, and they only have narrow areas of competence that do not include looking after themselves.

also, episodes have not so far got as far as 'two named women', but I was not expecting them to, because old.
two women sometimes, named no.

this is less fun than I had hoped.

Okay, so, I can see what they're trying to do, and it involves looking at Richard Dean Anderson being smart and kinda pretty even if young, so that mostly works. But the racism and sexism is wearying.

you should try original Man from UNCLE if you haven't already. You'd expect it to be terrible on these topics, but then it mostly isn't. Shockingly so.
