weird yet boring

MacGyver has a magic deaf person. She's dreaming the future. Because she's magic.
this is not what I expected from this show.
there's also a magic invention that makes deaf people hear by electronics. that seems more like the thing.
it's annoying because the deaf lady teaches sign and sign seems to be her main language and sometimes she'll tell Mac something in sign, but at one crucial plot critical moment her response was to yell really loudly instead. Which would be weird even if she wasn't deaf, because yelling 'that's the guy that kills you' seems like an obvious no no in general, but given her use of sign and her standing right next to Mac who she knows can just about sign, super weird.
on the plus side, there's a random black guy. he doesn't appear to be getting dead, and it's 45 minutes in. he's just existing, and riding off to send messages. this is progress.
it's also 49 minutes in and Mac hasn't done anything character specific yet. he's nice and polite and learns ASL, but he's just running around getting hit by stuff and punching people. boooooooring. wrong show.
... he just apologised before punching someone. nice manners are nice.
now he's having a sneaky conversation in ASL through the window. it's using the Mac Is Smart music? Wait, sign language is meant to be his being clever of the week?
Ah, 51 minutes and he tries to invent something. well its something.
imdb confirms the magic deaf lady is played by an actual deaf lady, which is helpful.
'Silent World' is the episode title.
yeah, so, the sum total of clever bits in this one was one water clock balance beam thingie and a noose.
all the rest of the clever was from the bad guys.
but Mac didn't figure it out with his brains, he just got a magic dream via deaf person.
urgh, the ending has a kissing bit, but it's imaginary? why bother? he... wouldn't kiss the deaf lady? or are they just going to cut down on numbers of women he knows for five minutes?
and then the actual ending was a deaf kid talking out loud.
wow, that's totally notable enough to be the last image of the episode. :eyeroll:
it's like they try so hard but so badly. the only way the structure of the episode makes sense is if it's being all 'look! deaf people! being deaf!' Like, that's the only thing going on quite often.
representation done weird and boring.
