Doctor Who: Patterns, Signal, Noise
Oct. 4th, 2015 09:22 amI woke up this morning and it occurred to me that it could in fact be deliberate that DW have been killing off black male characters, specifically mostly black male soldiers, because it could be all about Danny Pink.
The deaths I recall off the top of my head could be anyway: You've got the barely glimpsed soldier brother of Journey Blue, so we start off with a dead black soldier. Then there's the guy whose brain melted because of guilt, who might not count as an on screen death cause they kept him vacantly shuffling around after, but Danny was having problems with guilt at the time. Danny Pink dead and uploaded would be what they've been foreshadowing, and then after that is echoes: the man who died because he helped a child. And now a black soldier is literally haunting Clara, while she and the Doctor stop to have that awkward conversation about relationships, to remind us.
Mr Pink's story so far is there to mirror/motivate the Doctor and Clara, with the officer/president/orders thing and guilt and being willing to do anything to undo the deaths, and Clara in love with someone and the Doctor at first thinks she's fallen for the one with the visual echo of Doctor but nope, it's the parts of him he refuses to have anything to do with that are there in her boyfriend.
So okay, though I've just woke up and haven't double checked anything, just counting the deaths in the Danny Pink seasons, I can link them up to him and to themes and so forth.
The trouble with doing a racist thing repeatedly is that it looks really racist. The pre existing racism stinks up the place, even if you're trying to use that particular scent in a different way. It's like inviting in a bunch of really loud people chanting racist slurs, so even if there's a quiet geek in the corner expanding on the literary themes, they get drowned out.
