Jupiter Ascending: actually kinda good
Nov. 4th, 2015 06:56 pmNot the dialogue or the action sequences or, well, quite a lot of it
but the general feeling of 'I have written this fanfic (only with cat people and dragon wings) and now they filmed it'
good.
The action sequences bored me because they were just so visually busy it was like a lot of fireworks with someone in a lot of makeup making effort faces in the middle. Plus past a certain point they've said sod it to physics so they're just going to handwave the outcome and they're underlining it so hard you have to notice that.
I'm not saying that flying rollerblades are a bad thing. I've had that dream. Just, the end result of all those FX on one screen, didn't work for me.
I liked the genetics. Because it goes so far into WTF it starts making sense again. Like, okay, the universe is really really really really really big, and there's only so much DNA to go around, so recurrence, why not? And if you can play with genes to make splices, somebody is going to. That's just facts. Someone is going to do it to themselves, let alone make more puppy people to play with.
Not so much keen on the physics.
Or the bit where he's floating in space and it says he has 37 minutes of air but he's surrounded by all the other pods that presumably also have 37 minutes of air but he doesn't try and get them? That... huh?
That might have been physics again. I mean they had made up rules so probably their made up rules say he can only move while the big thingies are around.
I liked the bit where they have to go around doing all the paperwork and then she does her homework and knows which rules to quote when she gets kidnapped. Power!
Not so keen on the nearly getting married part though. I mean, I don't see how that worked at all. Like, you can be someone's heir without getting married. I'm fairly sure. Also if she's legally his mother again then, er, ew? That seems like an excess of stupid and ew at once.
The people and the clothes are all telling stories just standing there, and they went some on the diversity, so, yaays.
I will definitely watch this again some time.
But it's best for parts. Like, a bazillion fanfics, we can has them.

but they wait until the carrying capacity of the planet is exceeded
ie
they all going to die anyway.
or possibly not all.
which would be the big problem either way you look at it.
but if the planet is dying anyway, why not use the remaining resources so others can live? Planet as organ donor.
plus, why would you harvest 100% of a population? I mean, just as a farmer, that's bad practice. You want to leave a breeding population in place so it can build up again.
though if they've trashed the planet far enough the capacity would be way down.
downward spiral of resource management by repeat exceeding limits.
... to be clear, killing people is not a good thing, it's just interesting they stated they only do it once there are too many for one planet anyway, so what are their options?
or ours, as a species.
