Doctor Who: Mind of Evil 4/6

The Evil in question requires a lot of buy in from the viewer. I mean it's not just suspension of disbelief, it's that so far the cliffhangers are people making funny faces and being all :-[ with flashing lights happening. Logically, within the premis of the show, something super scary is happening, it's just you have to make it up in your head, which is work.
... I might possibly have found myself looking stuff up on the internet instead. So I'll wait until tomorrow to finish watching, in case less sleepy means more able to go with it.
If it was a book it would be proper scary, you're used to making the scary bits in your head with books. On TV though you're just left looking at gurning in technicolor strobe light. It's a bit distracting.
On the other hand it's very interesting for the Doctor/Master comm organising the rewatch. I mean, it's difficult to read it as mortal enemies. Mortal enemies tend to evil laugh if you accidentally die in their torture machine. The Master just gets all worried and does CPR and gets really invested in the Doctor being able to take it. And then the Master's worst nightmare isn't like evil or burning or stuff it's just the Doctor laughing at him. I'm reasonably certain that's not just slash goggles finding that difficult to read without a prior framework of actually caring quite a lot. Not necessarily in a sex way yet, just, you know, he had to be invested in his opinion for the laughing to work.
They really do seem more like the Master turned up to play and all these poor humans just get squashed because game pieces. It's not proper evil villainy if you're worried about your enemy.
Also I quite liked how there were Chinese people and the Doctor knew several different sorts of Chinese talking and was polite and diplomatic and left the Brigadier looking a bit stupid. It wasn't about Chinese people being danger, it's about them being in danger. I've seen much more recent stuff that makes that feel rather refreshing.
Plus Jo managed to escape with brains and courage and hitting people. It wore off, but she was doing quite well in the middle, and it weren't her fault that it turned around again. Yaay for having things to do.
I quite like this one, I'm just yawning and distracted.
Maybe the last two episodes will change things, but right now I need sleeps instead.
