I am reading this train wreck of reaction to the budget, and a lot of this Conservative originated complain about the now backburnered PIP cuts seems to be about 'context'.
Like, they're basically saying that they shouldn't have said 'tax cuts for the rich, benefits cuts for the disabled' next to each other like that.
I mean, call me strange, but I feel that if you're giving disabled people less than they need, that would be the basic problem. Not the PR disaster in this one thing this one time.
Conservatives talk about 'fair' and 'most vulnerable' and to them it's a comparison, where the people who are worst off should stay worst off but just about able to hang on.
I miss the discourse being about 'need', because need does not in fact go away, and sometimes some people need more than others, even if it makes them look better off than some other voters. Equality of outcomes ie ability to wash, dress, use the bathroom, and leave the house on the regular, that's the actual important part, and it's harder for some than others.
I would be very glad if the PIP cuts do not go through. But PIP already has the parameters set so tight it's not helping those who need it, so there still needs to be reform, just in the other direction.
