All that said, I did read an amazing Steve/Tony fic that kept me awake into the small hours and was epic and exciting and wonderful.
It was a Star Trek fusion by Sineala, who pretty much writes comics Steve and Tony, going back to particular eras for inspiration.
So possibly I need to read comics or comics fic or only stories that abandon MCU canon entirely
or, obviously, Star Trek.
or maybe the best stories are best regardless of fandom.
I mean I also rad some Harry Potter fic that was really good, because I was reading through an author archive. And I don't even read Harry Potter.
Fandom.
