Why do we keep telling the stories about the brainwashed soldier?
The one time where he really was just following orders.
I mean I felt for Hawkeye and the Winter Soldier as much as the next fangirl, but why is that the story that gets told over and over, when it has absolutely no real world application?
There's always a choice.
It seems rather more important to tell stories about how to make the right choices even in the worst places.

Date: 2017-01-29 05:51 pm (UTC)On an optimist day, I'd say, maaaaybe... it's to remind ourselves that we always have a choice, that commands can be refused. That we are not yet slaves.
On a usual day I'd say it's because people find comfort in reading about vulnerable victims who are really very tough guys. To tell themselves, if even this big bad got stomped under someone else's boot, maybe it's not my fault that I'm under so many boots every day. It doesn't make me weak.
Maybe I need to think more about this. I think there are multiple options.
