While looking for what ships did exploring in the real world old times
I find phrases like "not built for the open ocean"
and wonder again how any of our ancestors survived to do anything.

I know people who've crossed the open ocean in all sorts of stuff (eg single handed from the Canaries to Antigua in a 24 foot yacht) and as we see daily with the refugee crisis, given sufficient desperation people will try crossing the sea in whatever they've got and many will succeed.

Also, historians very frequently can't sail and don't ask those who can.
