beccaelizabethwith a very fast engagement, Wally's mom, and a bit of an oops.
also the point where I'm pretty sure me knowing the ending means I'm not getting the same experience of watching this. so spoilers for later episodes below.
The entire show at this point depends on them hearing punctuation that isn't there and not hearing what he's plain telling them.
Reminds me of Reverse Flash a lot, actually, he trolled them exactly the same, saying true things they didn't have the context for.
I was going to complain that Savitar's powers make no sense but I just remembered the thing where Barry in the speed force sees random people he loves, so, it is actually consistent, just... annoying? A bit rubbish?
I mean what is it telling us about these characters? The implication that they're possessed overrides what we could learn about their response to temptation. Wally misses his mom, we knew. It's a whole lot of drama but it's just... kind of hollow?
So I'm kind of bored of it.
And it is once again taking mental illness tropes and playing them for maximum drama and minimum actual health.
I'm mad at everyone for using Julian that way, and I think we're meant to be. The way he hesitated before saying 'abused', what Savitar does every time he uses his body that way...
... which, again, is a power that doesn't seem to be very speed rorce, now I think, but, ugh...
They're just pushing Julian into trauma over and over. Because they want to hear what the bad guy has to say? When he knows he's talking to them? I don't see why they think that'll be useful. But the using it to track him at least made a sort of sense.
They didn't just tie Julian down and make him do though, so, not actively evil, just asking him to hero in a real personal way.
Relationship drama because Caitlin just wants him around to cure her... that was what she asked first? Wasn't it? And he's having feelings, and then feeling betrayed that she still wants help? I mean... he's in the wrong, if I remember the sequence right.
Barry and Iris. I... have trouble with this ship in this show. Joe is their dad. Both of them. This is not cool.
That said, Iris is trying to avoid the whole Xander and Anya before the end of the world mistaken proposal thing, which seems fair.
But Barry has thought he was in love with her since always?
But that's what he says lately, there was a whole long dating other people phase that doesn't say that, so, pretty fair to doubt it.
I wanted her to say no when he asked, because pretty clearly about fear. Nut saying yes and then undoing is way more drama.
This idiocy with trying to change the future to see if they can... it's so stupid. They're flailing about changing her accessories, instead of looking for something causal. It makes no sense. They know time can be changed, the problem is ignorance of significance, nut nobody is saying that, so then a lab full of genius looks really weirdly foolish.
The other thing they're doing with the split personalities is or should be about taking responsibility for their own dark sides and bad choices.
... which makes not mentioning Barry's actual darkness a real frustrating choice.
But this thing Caitlin is doing out where we can all see, with Julian mirroring her and Barry, is going to be about Barry eventually.
He could go dark side. Because anyone could.
This just... isn't grabbing me as a way of exploring that for anyone
primarily because they keep talking about it in terms of losing their mind and having someone else talk through them
and just
no.
Choices matter. Mental illness matters, but they're not writing about it in a useful way.
Hopefully it'll end with everyone understanding which of their own actions and consequences they're responsible for and having a clear moral code to go on with
