I think people on tumblr change their name when people on LJ/DW would have changed their default icon.
New fandom? New name!
It's exhausting. I dont know if I know half these people. Who were they last year? Who knows! I can barely keep my long term friends straight, names are not my best good thing, and now tumblr just... reshuffles so much.

possible addition to this theory: old guard fandom, as well as new-to-fandom but older people, change icons on occasion but not username (on tumblr), i have noticed.


on a personal note i changed tumblr name once for the main blog, but i have a couple other blogs. and one of them i also changed the name for once. because. i'm weak ;)
