Dark Eyes 2
Jan. 17th, 2018 04:51 pmThese four did not give me feels, though I can see how they were trying to. In the first Dark Eyes the Doctor saves the Daleks because compassion, so in this one the comparison is with a medtech who worked for the Daleks to keep their slaves healthy, and feels horribly guilty about it. Compassion stops the Doctor from killing millions to save billions, or killing one to save all the Daleks victims since ever. Whether or not this makes them traitors is the thing.
Except no feels, because alive people can have another go tomorrow, and anyone still listening is team Doctor on the ethics side.
Buuuuut with what we know of the Time War his ethics shifted, eventually, ish. See the special.
So I can see what it's getting at, but, it disn't grab me. And it didn't seem like it grabbed the Doctor either. So it was just adventures time.
They were pretty good adventures. Until the last one, with the Master. I'm not sure what's missing with this Master but I didn't especially like it. Also it had gross sound effects for eye extraction. I do not need gross sound effects and the idea of eye extraction. Or for hundreds of victims to just go blind because time lords were having a fight.
Also the Master's actions make sense if the dark eyes particles are only in eyes, but if they can be extracted, why was Molly's life in danger before?
So I don't know, it had good bits but didn't grab me.
On the plus side my long term opinion that I'd happily listen to McGann read the phone book means I have fun listening to all of these. And I like the idea of him in a purple beetle with a silly car horn.
I also like Molly just installing someone in the Doctor's house for fifty years while he's away. I mean if she can get away with it then it's a better use than he had for it. Empty housing is annoying. This way is better.
So I had a good day listening to these, but once again putting causality in a knot and having handwavey scifi reasons for everyone to run around are the least interesting bits and the bits I least follow. Give it feels and emotional logic or my attention wanders.
Also, the dark eyes particles? Still sound like they're saying retro genitals to me. Presumably not, but it do make it difficult to take them seriously as a weapon of mass destruction.
