May. 21st, 2018 03:59 pmToday I watched disc 2 of season 3 of Dark Matter.
They have a bunch of stuff happen and fill episodes but I feel like it's biscuits not meals, cause there's not much to get into.
I mean they just had a time travel episode but I ended up watching it on fast forward because a whole lot of nothing happened. I mean, you didn't learn anything about the characters, they didn't do anything cool, they literally just walked up and down streets and went to a party, it was... nothing. And there's all sorts of meaty stuff to get into. I mean they're from this dystopian system where corporations can go to war, drop them in the more or less here and now and you could do like Continuum and call it a turning point, show where the seeds are sown, all sorts. And put characters in any radically new to them situation and there's opportunity to show a new facet to them. But no. They just... went there and home again. Did a tiny bit of fish out of water comedy, which is ridiculous given they visit multiple planets on the regular. I mean, shouldn't they be used to cultural differences? And why would it be the android doing all the deciding on their cover stories? And why have any of them get arrested if they don't get a compare and contrast on the legal system then and now?
I just... time travel is one of the most powerful story generators there is, and they... sucked the juice right out of it. Nothing. Nada. Zip.
Bored.
And it should be really difficult to be boring with those ingredients.

Date: 2018-05-21 03:31 pm (UTC)I actually liked Dark Matter but they absolutely couldn't be bothered with continuity or any kind of thoughtfulness beyond "this is cool! Let's blow it up!"
My feeling about Continuum is that TPTB earnestly prayed every day that they would be canceled so they wouldn't have to clean up all the loose ends, and their prayers were answered. I was gobsmacked about the potential for *any* timeline in which Kellog would be a resistance leader.
