BFA Torchwood 20 - The Last Beacon
Jul. 10th, 2018 05:32 pmBetween cataloging this yesterday and listening today I forgot this was the one by Gareth David-Lloyd. So I was listening and thinking I like this writer, I shall go listen to more by them. ... which might be tricky. I'm actually not finding anywhere that lists his audio work, let alone the writing for it. But I liked it.
It has a sense of place and a love for Wales, and the story obviously started with character and thinks characters are the actual point. Ianto gets some good moments but I think we spend more time with Owen? Or it's pretty even? So it isn't just a personal showcase or something. You can tell where it would slot in to canon, and it feels like it plausibly fits there. And I liked the ending.
Plus it's just funny.
... and includes checking into the hotel with only one room available. Is someone teasing fans?
The back of the CD is bollocks, not helpfully connected to the story.
Story is: Ianto wants to prove himself really part of Torchwood Cardiff, after Jack starts trusting him to go out alone again after the Lisa incident. He brings Owen and sets out to investigate a signal somewhere Ianto thinks of as near where his nan used to live and Owen reckons is more the middle of sodding nowhere. This is meant as a way of making friends.
... he also brings a coffee maker.
The rest of the disc is Owen being so out of place he can't understand a word some people say, Ianto being right at home, a shared hotel room, bit of taking shelter in a cave, quite a lot of bonding over a pub fight, and a tour of a tiny bit of Wales whilst playing spot the alien. Poorly.
It's good, it's worth the listening to, and I'm glad I bought it.
ooh, and a bit more searching found
https://www.bigfinish.com/releases/v/torchwood-one-machines-1762
has a disc by GDL too.
So I can look forwards to that.
