Jul. 15th, 2018 09:12 pmI am still reading fanfic looking for post war reconciliation and dealing with politics
but what I feel like I'm mostly finding is
... not even AUs, but like, what if everyone grew up and got normal jobs and never ever mentioned the war ever again.
Which is fine! I get it, you watched bad stuff happen to them for many books, you want good stuff to happen now.
it's a strange to me version of characterisation or redemption arc to take a bad guy and fast forward him until he has nothing in common with the original, but, okay, you do you.
it's just compared to what I was originally looking for, I have this feeling, like I'm standing there saying 'but this is a solution to the problem that I do not have'
you know?
like, does nobody actually want to deal with the specifics of the universe they are standing in?
did I already read everyone that cared about fixing things?
did everyone who thought it needed fixing bail after earlier books so they didn't write the fanfic?
I'm just... in every fandom you can reliably find the coffee shop au and associated nothing bad happens ever again versions. But we are there? because? the canon? Where things happen that are unique and distinctive? I mean, I was looking forwards to people wanting to write for their own actual fandom?
... sometimes i feel like the xovers do more with the specifics than the home grown fic...
I am not knocking anyone who writes, write whatever, it's better than I've managed in a great many years.
I am just... reading a lot of cute stuff that looks like every other cute stuff ever.
so.
that is a thing.
And the other thing that happens is absolutely nothing changes except the bad guys stop trying to kill them. Like, there are no systemic problems here, there's nothing wrong with the way things were, except that one bad guy. Every other bad guy got better and is just a bit depressed now but is fixing it by dating good guys. Everything else is exactly the same.
Which is the opposite approach to canon details. Many of them all over the place. But with no intention of changing them. Even if this involves both rebuilding and resurrection.
Which I also understand, lord knows there's characters whose deaths I've refused to acknowledge for at least twenty years, but...
*sigh*
I feel like the stories I started with were the only ones that think the stuff I'm looking for is the good stuff.
But, by now I've read so many stories, they might be doing the same things and the same amount of fixing, but I have seen it already so it don't feel the same.
I know the solution to 'this story does not cater to my very specific whims' is 'write own story'
I just... I don't know.
i don't know what would be the good stuff, sometimes, i'm hoping someone else thinks of it.
kind of like reading Stargate Atlantis and how some people do interesting things with colonising and politics and I only have the ideas they have and still want to read more like that only different.
there is some really awesome fic out there but a lot of it is aus where they keep the romance novel sketch of the primary pairing and drop them in different settings. so I can read about two middle aged screw ups falling in love in a thousand different universes no problem, but I can't very often read about how lifting the secrecy on the Stargate would change the world, even though that is clearly interesting.
and sometimes I do not know if that's only because I do not think of the right keywords to search for it.
which is, you know, frustrating.
eh, I whine
no use
going.
