I read enemies to lovers because I want to see how they solve everything that made them enemies in order to get them together
but a lot of fic acts like getting to the kissing is solving it.
which would not work for long.
and most of the rest acts like only one of them was Right, entirely and completely
so the other just gives up on everything from before and gets a personality transplant before the story starts
and then All Sorted
as if it were only ever personal, and no systemic problems remain.
which is why i do not read much post civil war Steve/Tony, even though at that point they fit my usual criteria. because most fans took sides as presented, and it's very frustrating.
mind, most of the ones that took Steve's side seem to have gone with him and Bucky OTP, which is fair enough, but not the set of crunchy issues I wanted.
Also I am really very Done with mind control stories. There are too many of them, and Only Following Orders should not be a valid defence. Deal with a Winter Soldier who had a choice and got systematically deceived and has to deal with that, then I'll be interested. The other builds in excuses so we can 'forgive' the poor pretty boy their ultra violence. There's too much of it around and it is getting disturbing.
I realise reading romances and wanting systemic political change may be like going to the ice cream place for a steak, but I don't know the keywords to look for the sort of thing I want, ad the romance makes the microcosm that makes it relatable.
So. Frustration.

Date: 2018-07-25 09:37 pm (UTC)I really, REALLY dislike that dumbass gimmick marketing ploy Marvel went with with "Teams", it's the absolute opposite of what a movie called "Civil War" shoulda taught its audience. Disgusting. Fandom should be smarter than this - and a small amount of it is.
...I however disagree re Bucky, because I believe - not in most fic, admittedly, but in mcu - that mind control wasn't an easy excuse here. The fics should be dealing with the aftermath of torture and of the gaslighting combined with abuse, but it's not the same as "choice". Having said that, I tend to like Bucky/Tony, if written decently and ic, because they both have shit to deal with, with or without sharing Steve. They both have a dark history and a lot of scars to overcome. Although, funny, I never really consider them "enemies to lovers". I don't think they are quite enemies, despite it all. Their issues to work out are not those kind of issues, somehow.
