Does anyone happen to know the magic combination of tags and exclusions that will get me Charles Xavier / Magneto when they're older?

I keep only finding First Class fic, mostly involving the beach going magically right and Erik moving in and agreeing with Charles about most things, and within that rather a lot of mpreg where they raise kids together without any canon mothers involved.

Reading at random from the high kudos fic has taught me what I'm not looking for.

I am not looking for stories where the only way to fix things is for them not to have gone wrong in the first place.

... yes I am aware canon went there.

I understand the appeal, if I had just finished watching First Class I'd want to fix it too.

But today I was looking for old friends, one in a wheelchair, and I am mostly not finding them...

You could maybe try filtering in additional tags like "canon disabled character", "future fic", "post-canon", "post-X3", "post-canon fix-it". Good luck with your search. :)

... 'canon disabled character' narrows the list from like 14K to 600ish... well, it'll be more focused...

you can try filtering out first class, or only looking at fic posted before it came out? that would lose you ones that do what you want but use the backstory, though

filtering out "canon divergence" ought to work except people are really bad at using that tag, and also canon time travel...

you could also try filtering on post-first-class-only characters and ships like Bobby or Rogue, alongside the main ship? it would mean they're at least using some later canon.

there is not an x box for filtering out First Class, or not one I understand.

and I do like it as backstory.

that's because they have "helpfully"renamed it "alternate timeline movies". But I tried and even with that gone it takes me to the middle of the second page to find anything that isn't xmfc aus with no wheelchair, because people can't tag. filtering out everything tagged "alternate universe" might be the best bet, but then you lose 'x3 never happened' aus too, and it still doesn't help that much. This might be one of the cases where ao3 filtering just doesn't help much because the main filter is so flooded with people who don't tag their aus, and the best option is googling for a themed recs list. :/

Do people filter by specific film for fandom tag? I know I suck at that for Marvel because it's all mixed up.

The fandom tags as currently show in the search are

X men (movieverse)
X men (Original Timeline Movies)
X men (Alternate timeline movies)

and some I've excluded that are like comicsverse or animated series.

I don't even know what they mean, exactly.

Individual story listings are quite likely to say
X Men First Class
but clicking on that to search by shows me
X Men (alternate timeline movies)

kind of like clicking on Magneto gets me Erik. Because yeah but huh but oh.

Yeah, sometimes the combining doesn't work as well. There's someone private tag for "old charles and erik" or similar, but sadly it's not a fandom-wide one.
