Stargate SG1
Jun. 19th, 2019 04:13 amI just rewatched Children of the Gods, the first episode of Stargate SG1.
... I bought a box set of the complete SG1 primarily because my existing DVDs take up several feet more shelf space than this one will.
I don't know if the picture quality was always like that (probably) but I'm currently really frustrated because
there are no subtitles.
I checked. I read the box. No fool I, I read and it said English for the Hearing Impaired.
But it is a lie.
No frelling subs.
My old DVDs only have French and Spanish, and also are a different region and will only play on some boxes. So it has been a while since I watched these episodes. And then probably on TV.
But now I have them on DVDs that promised I would be able to understand the words
and no
no subtitles for me.
Maybe later seasons have them and they labelled without saying it's partial?
Cheap.
Also weird is how old they seem. I remember these, they cannot be old.
... *sigh*
90s TV is just slow enough to be noticeable but just fast enough I don't automatically hit fast forward like I do with 70s TV.
... not that that works optimally with no subtitles.
The bit where Sam is introduced is cringey and I admit I muted a bunch. I used to just like that she existed, now I get annoyed she has to do that 'look, a girl!' bit.
... I like the way Jack says he likes women, but I am a teensy doubtful it's work appropriate.
SG1 is going to frustrate me for what it's not. They're going to go out there and blow shit up and Daniel will try peaceful contact and it will go wrong and eventually Daniel will blow things up real good too. That's just... their thing.
... I should write my stories with the actual exploration and colonisation bit.
I mean Daniel does say up front that he'd like to avoid the reputation we'd get if we meet everyone and shoot them, but I kind of recall the shooting new people was a regular thing.
But then the biggest important thing Jack does in the first episode is say Teal'c is with him. So. Also there's a reaching out part? Kind of?
There's enough I like it, but also enough I get real frustrated.
(Why is first contact an air force mission?)
(Why is an egyptologist their best diplomat?)
(... what would I like it to look like? Go think of that and write it...)
... and wouldn't the whole thing be different if the first contact guys grew up on Star Trek Next Generation?
... pop culture influences on characters inside pop culture: logically a Thing.
Huh, if a Star Trek fan and a Stargate fan end up doing first contact, maybe with a Farscape fan too...
... ideas.
ANYway...
I will be watching these slower than intended unless/until they develop actual subtitles.
ugh.

Date: 2019-06-20 07:01 am (UTC)Growing up being allowed to watch subbed movies on BBC2 I sort of automatically watch everything with Subs, which is good these days as I am beginning to need them. Kinda wish there was some techincal jiggery-pokery I good do to get them added whenever I put it a DVD.
Mind you it's starting to get awkward to get DVDs at all - and I am not investing in bloody blu-ray's at my age; aoart from an extremely select few; not that I've yet been able to find a way to watch them yet.

Date: 2019-06-21 04:24 am (UTC)I've watched them subbed, I must have watched them on TV a lot.
I remain attached to my DVDs. Unlike streaming I know they'll be there later and I've already paid for them.
