Looking for a story

Time Lord Chess, where the Doctor and his opponent (I think The Master) name people as pieces and draw complicated moves out with stuff and string and model a whole complicated set of intersecting timelines and, somehow, solve the Time War.

I want to use the stuff and strings thing in other time travel contexts but I know I read it somewhere so I also look for an ability to cite my sources
but I haven't found the right keywords yet.
