Whenever I think the Doctor and Rose are at their most insufferable
they find new and irritating levels of smug.
... aaaaand I'm failing at finding a second thing to say about these.
*sigh*
The atory is pretty cool where it's not being creeptaatic about Ood.
Torchwood Archive mission.
Big mystery of the universe.
Just whenever the Doctor starts saying how cool humans are I feel like he's talking about dancing monkeys. Somehow it's not...
... what's missing is 9 in the church asking how those two met. Like, Ten asks Ida anout belief, but it's directly relevant to ongoing plot. It doesn't feel like him being interested in individual humans. So he's just really annoying.
Also, I like the thinky stuff about belief
but
the Doctor says he believes in her
and
he pretty much shouldn't.
I mean it wasn't her actions that got her on that rocket
she chose to stay
and he didn't have time for that trip, or he could have saved at least some Ood.
But
it also was her actions?
because she'd been calm and together and connected with people and got them moving and proven herself a valued part of the team
so they didn't leave her to die.
I mean, also humans try not to
but these humans left Ood
so
the plan probably helped.
I do notice though when the plot makes it so the solution is slaughter.
Next to the book from earlier where the solution is arresting people, it's particularly striking.
there's a lot of meta and some academics about how the Soctor isn't a martial type of hero
but he don't half have a body count
and the soldier that does a famous last stand tends to get some last words to go with it.
The story means they Have To pretty often, is what I'm saying
and
(and I say this as someone with All The DVDs)
it's a thing to dislike about Doctor Who.
It says sorry
but somehow they Have To
quite a lot.
But that said there were some solid characters in this?
And Rose at least observed Ood slaves are wrong.
... no, still just... a problem.
ANYway
the next episode is Love and Monsters
and I actually started watching it
but then like
cringed so hard I wrote this instead.
... I shall finish it just to see if that's an unfair opinion.
... though I read a thing on a wiki about which bits they thought were cool about the monster design; if the stealing people's faces thing was what RTD liked about it, it possibly could do with being further away from The Idiots Lantern. No faces, many faces, depends how you looked at that.
okay, onwards...
