character creation ideas
Nov. 29th, 2019 09:23 pmI've been reading more about the Pathfinder setting Golarion, especially the gods, and vaguely wondering how to translate characters from other fandoms, as you do.
I was thinking that you can get a new and possibly interesting character by taking two characters the same person played and sort of squishing them together, finding what they had in common etc, and then throwing them at a new setting.
Like, Rip Hunter would be sad because what he's got in common with Rory is he loves his wife enough he'd spend thousands of years on getting her back. And he probably blames himself for her dying. And he has a particularly intense attachment to one particular historical period that he wears when he wants to be badass. But btoh kind of depend on time travel so are not a natural fit with any other sort of setting. Can still work though.
In Golarion his goal wouldn't just be vengeance, he'd be trying to get them back. Resurrection works, it just costs large amounts of diamonds. So he'd need the Rogues expertise...
Malcolm Merlyn and Captain Jack Harkness are not an easy fit
until you look at Torchwood from the perspective of... well, really large numbers of people they've pissed off.
Torchwood are arguably evil, we just like a lot of the individuals whose best efforts somehow add up to doing said evil.
See Torchwood One. I love Ianto, but he has been part of doing some shit. He personally has done some things. Not fluffy things. We like him, but.
Also, both characters wipe people's memories sometimes. Not as a central mechanism for Merlyn, probably, but he does train people and send them to do his orders and make them forget it. Like Torchwood take your memories if you try and leave, or routinely once a week if they don't think you're very important (audios).
Golarion has a god of secrets whose followers wipe their own memories so they cant betray those secrets even under truth spell. It can get so bad they have a whole double life going on and at least one life doesnt remember it.
... someone could be Malcolm and Jack and not know it?
Torchwood in Golarion would be thise weird human supremacists who are all about 'stars and magic' but also sticking it all in a vault for later or turning into equipment for them agents only. Not very different really. And Jack would be from one of the longer lived races but end up working for them because some of the things they fight are bad for everyone, only obviously eventually he's the last one left standing.
But a League of Assassins pretty much exists in Golarion too? Possibly more than one? So Merlyn barely needs translating either.
I kind of like that there's an evil god of secrets because then you can focus on the keeping of secrets as an evil act? Like, making things classified would fall under this dude's interests, and he is a very bad guy. Other aspects of his cult get very messy. Like Countrycide messy. Not so much for the food, just the killing.
Nasty.
There are so many evil gods on Golarion it's a wonder anyone gets anything done.
Anyway. This isn't very productive. I should really get up and do something. At least put an audio on. Not go back to sleep again again.
But I was just thinking.
