Discovered a frustrating thing: went into Pathfinder forums looking for more info on XP fir non combat encounters and speed of character advancement etc
found so far only threads where one person asked that question and a bazillionty replied to tell them to stop using XP.

It's all very well saying your characters should advance at the speed of the plot, but it just means you have the same question without any numbers. And the challenge rating system goes bye bye. And you didn't answer their question.

Many of thise people are playing the published Adventure Paths. I guess there it makes sense since everyone is doing roughly the same things at the same time and the next bit has assumptions about what level they're on. But if the GM is making it up as they go along the advice goes boom.

So. That's anmoying.

But I was making up numbers as if my hypothetical character was a minor cohort Recruit, and then thinking about what level assorted characters would be to be able to do this and that, figuring out a party level from that and then seeing what XP awards would look like. And it's a way to go whoosh real fast. But also probably die. But in a high enough level party probabky not stay dead? So now I get it why cohorts, because if I could be an apprentice on the Enterprise or hang out with Merlin that would sound so cool. And then I'd nearly die because they're dealing with things sooooo high above my level, and then I'd go away again.

Not sure that really counts as cohort recruit student per se, they seem to be more loyally attached, but still. Math for fun ideas.

The main objection to XP seems to be it's meaningless on the player side until they can level up, so why not just level?

... I miss GURPS. I didn't know how to do adventure design or character points there, but every time you got one you could turn it into shiny character things, which makes it look better.

Of course you could also build unplayables real easy too, because fewer guidelines.

I like the magic trees in GURPS standard Magic system. Learn easy things then zoom off to learn the more difficult ones. None of this levelling where you could theoretically know a bazillion things, xan only memorise a handful, and they might have nothing to do with anything else you learned. Just learning to get better at the already things, or starting again to get a new tree. Logical. Sense making.

No idea how either plays, but Pathfinder seems a lot more about maximum boom and here kill a dragon.

ANYway, I sat down to write a plot and ended up with ramblings about XP.
I'll go do the plot thing.
