I have read a bunch of Merlin fic (possibly more than I've watched episodes) and much of it got all angsty about hiding magic and oh no how will people feel will they know he was hiding etc et angsty c.

... I did not remember he actually flat out told everyone in episode 3.

I mean, after that, he obviously does still have a secret, but I feel them being annoyed at him for not telling them would be somewhat unfair.

He told. They laughed.

... which is weird but also generous of them? Arthur, having seen what accusing Gwen got him, bent over backwards to unaccuse Merlin. But it do make them all look stupid if he actually believed it.

I had entirely forgotten how they wrote Gwen here. The stumbling uncertainty, the saying a thing and backtracking, the obviously didnt mean it that ways. I think it is my least favorite. It do give here somewhere to start from, an obvious arc to certainty and confidence, but as is I dislike it quite a lot.

Morgana and Arthur remain uncomfortable.

Her trying to get him to do things by implying there's no hero here, fair, get him in the pride. But the 'I can't imagine anyone loving me that much' is just... I know full well where the adaptations get things from but I still find it very awkward.

And she's another pretty lady using pretty lady as her leverage.

Arthur seeing through it right away is fair though. They've known each other a long time.

Uther is mean and annoying and I know ASH can be far more interesting than this.
boo.

... AU bunny where misfired magic swaps Giles and Uther and Giles has to fake it, without his glasses. And probably with magic, given how much magic needs countering? And then he'd get busted as an imposter and, er, that ends in a pyre, doesnt it. Oh dear. They'd never believe it was on accident. But then he'd not think to pretend to be a king. Soooo... *Merlin's* misfired magic, and some complex plot?

Uther would make a terrible Watcher though. In any season.
Least damage done if it's while Giles was visiting with the coven. Plus, transportation magic, easily goes wrong. And Uther can get his butt kicked by actual witches if he really feels the need. Except they had just given Giles all their magic at one point. And he'd have to come back straight away to save the world, which, time travel, should work.

... as you can see from the idle plot bunnies, I am not exactly dull of things to say about actual Merlin.

An episode about a plague is uncomfortable, but the way it sparked a literal witch hunt and then gave them a monster to hit is actually more so. Plus the idea that Merlin shiuld cure people just because magic is illegal? The practical solution to that one involves getting better at hiding it and remembering to remove the evidence. Not just saying he shouldn't and letting people die.

... that's not going to stop annoying me, is it?

... there's reasons I think I stopped watching this the first time around...

Oh well, it's something to watch over dinner, which Torchwood very much is not, especially since it's 1-06 next.

For dinner viewing it's doing fine.
