Donna Noble Kidnapped
Jul. 23rd, 2020 04:57 amI listened to the first two stories of the Donna audios.
I think I like them but Donna stories spend a lot of time with misunderstandings, feeling out of place and not quite up to all this, and verging on embarrassed. I think on first listen I dont quite trust it not to cross the line into mocking, but so far it is indeed about Donna saving the day in very Donna ways, without the Doctor.
The first story is set right after the whole thing with her husband in the library, so she's super sad but thinks it was all imaginary so she doesnt trust herself. It's a good emotional moment to explore and the sense of loss could build a connection with her mum but they're both too spiky and any understanding runs into their defenses.
I kind of felt like the actual aliens were a distraction from the human bits. That bit got a bit nasty. Also there's a point where a man gets told his wife hasnt left him, she's dead, and he has a panic attack, and... everyone treats it as an inconvenience that gets in the way of the adventure? That wasnt kind.
The second story, Spinvasion, anout a PR firm that persuades a planet to accept being invaded, felt a bit on the nose. Like, I know it's only taking aim at late stage capitalism, but the whole thing where everyone's happy to work all the hours in hellish conditions for no pay, because at least their taxes aren't going to scroungers, and their jobs arent being automated away! ... it... did not feel fun.
I liked when Donna and her friend won.
Haven't listened to the other half yet, not entirely sure I'll like them, the ideas are fun but I dont trust them to be kind I guess.
Shall see.
