I continue to read the Pathfinder adventure path Hell's Rebels.
It has a lot of good bits but it wasn't making me as happy as I figured it would even though there's plenty of recruiting people and diplomacy and organising things.
I think I have figured it out: the kind of recruiting I want to do is high stakes turn enemies into friends sorts of things, and the kind the adventure wants me to do is just gathering in and organising people that already agree with me.

There's a section where you have to recruit nobles to the cause, but there's only one where it matters what you do, the others have all chosen their allegiance already. It doesnt give any rules for recruiting some of them because hey, they're evil, you can't fix that.

So that's exactly what I dont like.

I am aware alignment is a thing in Pathfinder but (a) alignment isn't the only reason people choose their politics, so if you think of a good angle you should be able to sell them on self interest and (b) there are rules for changing alignment. Granted, mostly your own, but I'm pretty sure there's redemption rules in this stack of rules somewhere. So it should be possible to try, but the adventure assumes it isnt.

Also it keeps giving you the kind of enemies that are not generally amenable to diplomacy, like undead and devils. The sort of things where their alignment is what they're made of. Generally the game assumes you have to kill those.

So it's great that there's variety in the actions players would need to take, diplomatic bits etc, but the thing I specifically looked forwards to was the capacity to change people's minds, and that's exactly what it isn't doing.

*sigh*

It is very much giving you xp for the non fighty bits too though, so that's grand.

I like the plot and the adventure so far. Lots of variety and unusual settings and things to do.

But it's less about making friends than finding them.

Which is cool, but.
