Pathfinder me
Dec. 15th, 2020 10:07 pmI have been thinking about character classes, and which one I would be if Pathfinder classes worked for real
and obviously the answer is like Commoner, or Expert if a degree counts. All about that NPC life. Ongoing lack of adventure and extreme staying home.
But other than that, and assuming I wouldnt just get into training and die...
I don't know.
I mean if I look at level 20 as like a goal, then wizards and arcanists can make themselves immortal, and use wishes to bring back dead people. That seems like goals.
But wizards are squishy and fragile. And need to prepare spells every day. And get eight hours sleep.
Honestly the sleep thing would probably block me from... most things.
If I start at the beginning I'd want a character that Knows Things, so I'd probably go Bard. But they only ever get level 6 spells. Cool, but, limited.
Clerics have a boss, and already I looked at the Pathfinder deities and decided I'd have to do the Test of the Starstone, because I do not quite agree with them. Difficult to cleric your way to 20 if you want to be a competing god.
Druids are a bit nature-y. Obvs. And I do not aspire to turn into animals, which is pretty integral to the concept. Urban Druid seems nice and can be Community focused and eventually do miracles, which is neat. But. Wild shape. I have enough trouble with this shape.
I dont really aspire to hit people. Which is sort of limiting in Pathfinder.
I had one build of a Bard Druid Mystic Theurge that could do many interesting things at high levels, but the internet told me Mystic Theurge was a bad idea and Bard Druid was the worst way to do it, so what do I know? But I liked the idea of fitting arcane and divine magic together, that was neat.
Loremasters know things. Knowing things is tempting again.
Thing is I've met me and I suspect I'd do the equivalent of my educational attainment thus far: wandering around trying different things in different areas until ending up with a degree I havent used lately, vaguely feeling like I should go study some more.
If I was in Pathfinder life for real I'd probably be level 1 in everything that would fit together and not require heavy armour. Or being lawful. I'd just be a first level everything u til my CR on paper wildly overestimate what I can actually do.
But! I know why, too. Because Pathfinder assumes you'll have a team. You need a team. The rules reward specialisation, so the rest of the team have something to do. Clearly defined roles all round.
So I could concentrate on Knowing Things and even be slightly breakable, as long as we had someone good at traps, someone good at healing, and someone good at fights.
... but I'd still want Grand Cosmic Power and eventually leveling up to doing 9th level spells ie anything you can think of in wish or miracle sized pieces.
Also, am not a singing bard. Or a comedy bard. Or a performing in front of people bars, really. And I find mind control very dodgy indeed.
I'd need to archetype a Bard a Lot to avoid all that.
Probably just stick with wizard.
A stay at home making things sort of wizard.
Every group of adventurers needs to know one like that.
If I could get to be a Recruit then my XP would go up along with my mentor, without actually being the one in the firing line. Wouldnt take me to level with a 20, would be a nice boost.
... and I'm back to being an NPC.
Also I don't see how wizard school works when xp are usually combat based.
... or I do but it's a bit adventurous...
Still. The real answer is a little bit of everything and getting distracted a lot.
Ah well.
I should figure out how to actually play this. Even online. With strangers. Who may expect me to talk.
Just reading the books is a whole seperate hobby tho.

Date: 2020-12-16 12:23 am (UTC)So only wizards can get arcane Immortality.
other classes have their own paths that defy aging, but that's a whole other research line.
Wizard arcane discovery immortality is a cure for aging, eliminating any age penalties.
alchemists can do eternal youth but that's very... recipe.
just being an elf is a good start.

Date: 2020-12-16 12:27 am (UTC)I dont see how though if it's physically identical and doesnt work on those who die of old age.
seems like contingency cyclic reincarnation works better, but that's not all arcane.

Date: 2020-12-16 12:44 am (UTC)otoh a Monk of the Four Winds has a 20th level capstone that both eliminates the signs of aging and automagically reincarnates if killed.
... monk is a very energetic path though.
... books are better.
