Sun and castles

beccaelizabethI am currently fiddling with castle designs with the Pathfinder downtime rules.
Usually you draw them like battle maps but I just turned it around to draw sideways
which is complicated by their being no rule I could find on ceiling heights, and quite a lot of examples of ceilings with space for Large monsters. Large is up to 16 feet tall, and distance in Pathfinder exists in 5 foot cubes. So okay, make the main floor with the ballroom etc 20 feet tall.
But then I made the next two 15 and 10, because maybe you dont expect Large people to be visiting upstairs? And I've seen fancy buildings kind of like that. I think the servant floors were on top.
But then I figuted, I wanted a skylight to let sunshine in to the summoning chamber, but I put the summoning chamber on the ground floor. If I make it be outside then the chalk marks would get washed away by weather and then the summoned things get out, so, got to be indoors. But sunlight is helpful vs many things. You'd want the option in case things went wrong.
If the building on top of it is 20+15+10 feet tall, the sunlight is going to take a while to get all the way down to the circle.
So now I'm thinking of building shadows and which way the castle needs to face if the big oak in the courtyard (shrine to Nature) is going to actually have sunlight and where the Garden and Greenhouse could even go and which way the defensive walls cast a shadow and how to put the Observatory anywhere that won't just shade everything else
and I'm fairly sure no one else will pay that much attention
if I even use this castle for anything.
... I kind of want to make a room sized sundial where someone marked on the walls when the sun will get there and summoning hours are between x and y o'clock (if you want it sunburned), or opposite on the clock if you want the spooky things to feel comfy.
... they're probably comfiest at night but some parts of the world dont always have much night so then you'd have to make do.
Maybe if the summoning 'room' was in the middle of a much larger area, the angles would be more forgiving...
