Mar. 29th, 2021 05:41 pmToday I got a food delivery, so I spent the day waiting for the delivery then putting it away.
... yes it was a one hour time slot, but my brain.
I kind of miss going to the supermarket. But I am not looking forwards to going back. Obvious reasons really, but I wasn't good at crowds before all this last year, and a year spent mostly in my flat has really shrunk what seems like a crowds.
Delivery is great.
I was looking at the news and the size of that ship that got stuck and just mentally comparing it to, say, starship sizes, cargo capacity of a Stargate, or the average Teleport spell.
Those all seem sized to get an adventure party somewhere interesting without fiddling about in between. Even starships have a crew the size of the plot.
But actual ordinary container ships are SO HUGE. Right now, just floating around, so Huge.
To fit one container through a Stargate is achievable, but to fit that many in a single activation? Big nope. So I wonder how long it would have to stay open to just drive all those through in a straight line.
Useful amounts of trade between planets would probably be more than one container ship.
And magic isn't going to get very far with handling that many containers. It'd be pretty advanced magic to handle the one. Mage Hand is not going to manage it.
But flying carpets in space would be super handy because you wouldn't have to bring fuel with you. Sure it's a limited amount of thrust, but it can keep going until the magic runs out.
But still. Am trying to imagine huge amounts of mass in containers. Floating in space? Still going to need a lot of go to get anywhere.
The scale of routine daily life and the scale of most fiction I have read are not matching.
Real life is more ambitious.
