Today and yesterday I watched season 5 of Killjoys, the final season.
... I had seen gifs of many of the good bits on tumblr already, but that was just kind of relaxing. I do not need another show doing a shock twist ending, I wanted a good ending for once.
Killjoys delivers
Some of the ending was a bit 'how did you survive?' 'no idea!' and then just, like, being happy about it, but I honestly dont care, that's just... the Doctor with his hands out, just this once, everybody lives! Like if you hate that part you can ignore it, but why have an explain in the finale when you can have a happy? People survive unexpectedly all the time in this show if there's more story to do with them, its great.
I loved everything about Aneela and Kendry's arc. Like they didnt get the whole thing with the lectures and the you can be a better person, they got like 'I was afraid you'd think I was a monster' and 'I was always a terrible person!' It's so great. And then because they have their... really, really small list of people they give a shit about, they start acting... not terrible? Actually attempting to do good? While still being, you know, cold bitches who will kill you. It's so great. Queens with an empire of their own, and somehow you're like... only slightly scared that's a terrible idea.
And everyone got to stand up to their abusive families and do better! While still being themselves and their terrible families making sense as people too.
And they pack a lot of emotional mileage into two discs. Like the story really steams along and gets things done.
I was thinking though, when Picard recruits a guy with a sword who decapitates people, and they completely ignore the existence of stun settings, it makes me really angry. But when Killjoys just... you know, does a whole lot of violence... it does not make me angry. I think because it doesnt disappoint me? We know they are going to solve problems with violence. But not so much with hate and fear and revenge. People get chances and choices, when there's time. Killjoys ends up hopeful about people and their ability to turn their lives around. Which takes some doing, considering some of the places it has gone through.
I liked it a lot and I'm considering starting Killjoys season one at the beginning and watching it all again.
