DW BFA Dreamtime
Sep. 4th, 2021 09:17 pmI think I maybe like this one, but I'm not quite sure. It's key to how the plot unfolds that this time it is actually magic. No technology behind the curtain. Just the Dreamtime, actual collective dream of hundreds of thousands.
Which isnt generally how DW does, so, that's a bit... something.
Also the only things I know about Uluru and associated mythology were probably in this, and I am dubious about it being, you know, careful and appropriate stuff. So I get distracted by a vague general suspicion. Oh well.
I was not a fan of a moment when the Doctor pointed out something was wrong because a woman was doing a traditionally male job. I feel like the cultural respect rather clashes with the baseline sexism of that concept.
I like that the Doctor was cause and effect. Time travel, always 'fun'.
I liked the bit where they're trying to rescue the Doctor via psychic link and Hex is told to think of everything they've shared and he's like uh oh, should have been Ace trying this. And then he's told he needs calm happy memories of the Doctor and he's like
!
... I mean I'm sure people get those, sometimes, but they might have to focus down a little.
As first adventures go Hex had a very weird one. Laws of physics need not apply.
Evocative, but weird.
ETA: I just read some other people's reviews and they were like 'enjoyable but not sure it made sense'.
I think it made sense on its own terms but those terms are unusual for Doctor Who so the degree of rolling with it required is A Lot.
