Today I was sorting through stuff to go away
(no longer sparks joy)
and I realised I never took the batteries out of my lightsaber
so I removed batteries
that expired
2005

two zero zero five.

... they looked fine, but *yikes*

going to dispose of them properly and pronto.

so then I went through my other geek toys
and mostly they were fine
(... mostly they were still in their box, so the batteries are old, but never used.)

though the other light up sword is... next to the rubbish bin right now until I figure out how to dispose of it properly, the batteries being Very Done.

a couple of fiddly ones look fine but wont come out, and youtube suggests using a paperclip
but who has a paperclip anymore?

if I do it is Hiding.

So that tasks is a work in progress, but, at least I know it needs doing now.

Also I found a small stash of music CDs in the same box as my sonic screwdriver collection, so I got my Buffy soundtracks back. :-)

Depending on what type of battery, if old battery leaked and it's small enough, that can sometimes be cleaned and get the thing working again. Depends how much damage. The point of a paperclip is to get a bit of leverage, so anything small enough will do.
You probably don't want to touch the acid with bare hands, but if you have disposable gloves, or improve with plastic bag, or even a bit of tissue while you work with it. And keep the window open. It's usually not a big deal, but safety first.
Yay to Buffy soundtrack!
