Today I listened to all four parts of the latest River Song audio adventure.
I liked it very well. It was complicated, going back and forward between four different years, and River had to figure out what was going on, but it had a lot of heart, and showed people learning and growing and loving each other, including River.

I liked it that it started with River refusing to write in her diary because she believes there's only enough room in it for her life with the Doctor, and anecdotes implying she's been living her life as if the Doctor was the only important part, but by the end of the adventure it has been possibly a year or more for her, and she'll happily use pages for this family she has become part of.

And the academic hologram also develops a new life and set of experiences, though the possibility the university wasn't respecting his research in the first place was frown making. The hologram became a person with a richer more complex life and didnt have to be given permission to do things any more. Plus he kind of transitioned, initially by accident but at the end by choice.

And the whole plot turned out to be very centrally about how LGBT attitudes and rights have changed over the years. And how that starts sad but enables a happy ending.

Also there's one bit where the characters, having just watched some Austen drama, say that one day there will be period dramas about 2014, when they are, and I had to realise how long it has been since 2014 already, which is never a perspective I'm quite ready for.

The story weaved together tragedy and love, so there were dark moments and very sad bits, but having listened to the whole thing I think the ending pulls it into such a nicer, hopeful, sort of mood, even with how it ends for some of them.

So it's about time travel but also the way trauma and grief can pull you back to particular moments that can be terribly hard to escape, and the way lives and families can be shattered, but also how they can be made whole in a new way.

I like it very well indeed.
