Torchwood left the fun in another box

beccaelizabethBeen listening to Torchwood God Among Us. Have listened to two out of three boxes so far.
It has some interesting going on but it's still pretty bleak.
Hostile Environment is probably the darkest thing Torchwood has ever done, which is saying something. But it's just about being homeless. Most of it could happen to anyone, the Torchwood bit is central but somehow not the point, which is dark. It couldnt get that bad if Torchwood paid any attention to homeless people. It couldnt get that bad if anyone paid any attention to homeless people. So. Dark.
Once Jack gets involved he fixes what he can immediately, shares what he has, understands. Which is the kindest characterisation of Jack for a while now. Yet he still explicitly shuts Tyler down when he offers understanding in return, because he's not the one Jack lost.
Jack seems better this season. There's some excellent character things going on with Jack and how he connects to someone whose partner recently died.
But it's kind of making me uncomfortable. There's some gender and sexuality things going on that feel a bit not good, but make me feel like I've got a conspiracy board and some string when I try to articulate them.
Still, given the level of horrible that happens to everyone, kind of can't find anything it doesn't punish. ... bit not good.
It doesn't make me feel everyone is carrying the idiot ball so I guess the plots are working better, but they do often rely on people being fundamentally awful, so that's... not fun.
It also had Jack express the opinion that it wouldnt be right to resurrect Ianto because resurrection is horrible. Not an exact quote, but something like that. Which is a whole can of worms. Set of cans. Worm buffet. Jack being that depressed again is a problem.
But I dont know if the stories agree with me.
I keep deleting these as soon as listened to them, because plots dark, but, I'm wanting to go back and collect Jack moments this season, which I didnt want from Aliens Among Us. So that's something.
I dont think these are fun to listen to though.
