Today I finished reading Torchwood Exodus Code.
It took a few tries.
I cannot recommend it.
I'm sure no one sat down and decided Let Us Do A Sexism
but they very much did a sexism
and it was boring.
I feel like if I unraveled this story and had another go with some of the same parts it could be okay but as it is there's a bunch of messy parts and mad women and I am making a face like :-/
The ending also didnt seem to pay off much of the book. Although if the spirit of the planet needed to learn from an offworlder (Jack), a being of the underworld (a disabled woman who could turn into a panther), and someone very much of the regular world (theoretically Gwen)
then having swapped Gwen out for a computer program maybe might make things weird years later
and I could imagine that explaining some Big Finish stuff now.
Also it's a lot easier to explain the whole story effecting women plus only Jack
when he drew three circles, for alien influence, synaesthesia which this book announces Jack has, and being recently pregnant
and Big Finish explains Jack has been recently pregnant.
I mean it's a lot simpler to explain than his vague explain that the 51st century does things different.
I feel like I could be kinder to this book
but Gwen gets made 'mad' and sedated and carted around like so much baggage through a plot that really is affecting her most of all
yet is there to raise the stakes for Jack and make him suffer.
So I'm not feeling kind towards this book.
Honestly I'd have liked it better if it was a Captain Jack adventure and just left Gwen out of it.
There'd still be the problem of weirdly sexist pheremone induced madness
but...
nope, still making a :-/ with an option on >:-(
