Wrath of the Righteous on the page
Nov. 18th, 2023 07:25 pmToday I finished reading the paper version of Wrath of the Righteous, on top of two play throughs of the computer game on xbox (Azata and Trickster/Legend).
The computer game did some excellent things with the story that are not present in the parts of the Adventure Path I have (2-5)(am hoping one will come out as print on demand but am seriously considering getting the pdf, there's a lot of good stuff in these.)
Areelu Vorlesh is fascinating on computer but just kind of exists in the adventure path.
A bunch of the bad guys in the 6th part are... maybe not entirely skipped but close, in the computer game.
Threshold was an unalloyed improvement in the computer game, not least because a maggots theme is really really gross, and I liked the weird break up of reality bit a lot better.
One fun thing in the paper adventure path is it got to the last part and, because of how basic mythic powers work, reminds the GM the PCs are now immortal. They can lose their stuff but not their lives, more or less. So the last part is on a timer, so they can fail to save the world by getting killed too often and wasting time waiting to wake up. Very Harkness.
Having played Ianto Jones as Trickster/Legend I kind of want to take the spare bits of the paper path and use them to fill in what happens to the other characters, the ones that weren't his core team. There's challenges enough on the Worldwound to keep everyone busy. And it's an explanation for how everyone gets XP, if Seelah is leading a B team. (Seelah stayed home a Lot because she clanks when she moves and Jones and Woljif were in theory sneakily sneaking, though in practice I forgot to use that button like, most of the time.)
The thing with weird xover rpg characters is its like being a fandom of one. Ianto in my version of Wrath isnt going to be massively similar to canon Ianto. Interesting stuff to work with about error and redemption though.
Legend Ianto gave up mythic power entirely, so he gave up a shot at immortality. If he figures out a way to reconnect with Jack they'd all feel a bunch about that. And there are other sources of mythic power, maybe ones that would suit him better. But he spent all that time on a platform of Sarkoris for Sarkorians, and the Material Plane for Mortals.
... mind you, some versions of Inevitable Excess give your primary back their mythic power whether they wanted it or not. Hmmmm...
The thing with the way mythic power works in the books is you can just decide, when you gain a mythic tier, to make yourself a deity. A small one, but still, an actual spell granting god. 3rd, 6th and 9th tier. How does that even work out for a GM or as roleplay? Is it like taking Leadership only bigger? Or do you have to take Leadership as well, to get any followers? As written you get domain spells, but followers seem optional.
I feel like becoming a god is a bit central to a story. Like, it shouldnt be an optional ingredient of kicking demons around. Gods have jobs distinct from adventurers.
I think there's new DLC very soon now, so I'll likely be playing the computer game again again soon.
But the paper version was a lot of good imagine.
