6, Constance and Flip

I didn't remember this audio at all even though I've rated it before.
Turns out there's a very stressful to listen to bit where one companion is abducted by a creepy guy, who declares they are getting married, despite her already being married, and is all 'what can you do? already stole you' about it. And she gets away! And another woman helps her! And when the creepy guy catches up the other woman... apologises, says 'it was like that for all of us', and lets him get on with it.

That is a level of creep I was not expecting from Doctor Who. They very rarely go anywhere near sexual violence. There are other adventures where women end up abducted and locked up somewhere but it's rare.

I think I prefer when there's just danger of death or cyber conversion or some such.
And I massively prefer when the locals fight back, rather than just be resigned to it.
Even though that lady made progress later, the progress was not in the direction of 'realise she did wrong about the abduction' (which everyone local called an elopement)(ugh).

Starting with a party and then having the slave trade underpinnings of the money come up is solid storytelling. Freeing slaves with some distractions and explosions, pretty okay. Being unable to change history to get slavery abolished sooner, that's how DW works. I like how Constance brought up the idea of her staying behind and helping abolition happen, and the Doctor took it seriously and was gentle with her realising it wouldn't actually help.

So the whole story was looking at the ugly bits of the Doctor's favourite country on his favourite planet, and using Constance and her father's farm to bring the changing perspectives front and center.

Solid storytelling, but more stressful than standard death threats or horrible dooms.

I have been relistining to all the Constance stories in a row, because I have a few I didn't listen yet, and there's some absolutely solid characterisation and character arc going on. She's sort of archetypal and has the stiff upper lip thing going on and also she's dealing with a whole bunch of feelings stuff while feeling like she shouldn't feelings. Is good stuff.

I did not however listen to the Flip audios yet so I am going to have to double back and listen them as flashbacks after I'm done.

I like the contrast. There's no getting them muddled up in voice or behaviour. Good story generator potential there.
