Doctor Who: The Robot Revolution

beccaelizabethThat was fun. Very good introduction, shows her before life all quick and vivid. And you get a lot of chances to remember her name.
Belinda Chandra.
The repeatedly saying she doesn't like Miss is probably not going to be a gender thing, maybe an achievement goals thing, but, still many episodes to go.
I liked how quickly the bloke was sketched in and made to look a loser. 'Girls are bad at math' indeed, obviously a wrongun. He didn't need many lines to make sense.
Those name a star certificates are RL scammy, but it's very Doctor Who to go, okay, what if you did just name it that? And now there's a solar system with your name on it? And inhabited planets? And instead of humankind they've got missbelindachandrakind?
And it turns out not to be a good, for missbelindachandrakind.
But Belinda didn't do any of that so everyone resenting the Queen had kind of made up the story too?
So now it's a story about stories and scams and taking things too literally and trying to read the real communication between beats.
Which was an odd thing to set up but makes for an interesting counting game.
I liked the certificate being all Significant and the weird doubled time streams and the torn corner as Evidence and everything.
... I don't like the companion being a big mysterious mystery again.
Mrs Flood being there all fourth wall breaking kind of suggests this is all on the same street as before? Busy street.
But the articles mentioning it suggest it is just her being An Mystery again, new place new persona.
I am expecting an RTD answer so it's not worth speculating, it'll be all Big Feelings Stuff instead.
I kind of like that the Doctor has highlighted his prior connection to Belinda but he has also skated right past other bits because timelines. So he's being a bit mysterious about the mystery too.
Very first episode of him.
I liked it that the certificates touching made Kaboom, but now I should logically be worried about literally every bit of money the Doctor or his companions ever use. I mean, that stuff gets in circulation, and maybe it's in the right year, but maybe it's in that year twice. And it could just randomly meet in a money drawer. Or clothes! You leave something behind in a charity shop and someone buys it and bumps into someone in the street and KABOOM. Same Hat, disaster.
Basically they were on firmer ground with saying it was people shaking hands you have to watch out for, and everything else is just unintended consequences central.
Mind you, might explain that last shot. You never know.
I think the torn certificate was back in a frame there. If it was then that's furture future. Like future for everyone future. And the calendar dates make it very specific when we're counting down to. Which is a day with an episode I think.
I kept on thinking Martha, and I feel like the parallels are set up. Hospital medical obviously, but also 17 years ago flashback puts us in range, til I'm tempted to figure out what was in the sky back then. Like this story is in deliberate dialogue.
People did keep saying the Doctor now understands the apology he owes Matha.
I like Belinda and how a nurse has a different take on what Doctor means. Not taking his nonsense or his authority. She was told to trust him and the one who said that... illustrated the dangers. Then they arrive in the place surrounded by injured people and she sees the sort of help she knows how to be and gets stuck in, but checks with a Doctor if she knows enough first. Asking if they work the same. And the Doctor steps up and meets her where her interests are at. He always likes it when people ask the right questions.
Also it's funny when he goes tada two hearts. Like it's a clever trick he's pulling.
I wonder if it is a fun fact new viewers will need to know later.
Belinda didn't make perfect optimal decisions and she didn't embrace Adventure and I like that for her on both counts. We have a Wants to Go Home and go to her next shift, and as far as she has seen so far Adventure looks like her shifts but with less hospital.
Putting out the lights in the hospital is *very* not good. The Doctor being late had better be because he had a lot to successfully fix there. Too large consequence for small action.
Also I hope he absolutely did not get her address out of her work place because that is just not on. Too many creeps in the world.
